Hosting small, focused roundtable discussions or webinars on emerging trends can attract influential figures and establish you as a valuable connector in the industry. This approach builds authentic relationships based on shared interests and mutual support.

A lot of listening, linking and learning about the space, who occupies it and what they are in it for (how they measure their impact/returns) is crucial. Today, it is a lot easier than it used to be earlier. Networking at multiple spaces is possible. Online networking and connecting has made things much easier. I will also follow many industry experts and opinions leaders, to get a deeper insight into them for sure, but importantly into the VC world too. Initially I may be a part of online forums, then offline and gradually may even be at the helm of setting spaces for others to find value in.

While LinkedIn is one option, consider the low conversion rate it offers—there are thousands of proposals and decks received. Do they really review all of them? Not likely. However, we know how recommendations work—they help you stand out in the crowd. Leveraging your network definitely gives you an edge. Thousands of people reach out to VCs, even with powerful ideas and pitches. But how can you make them interested in yours? That’s where your network, referrals, and recommendations come in. If your network has a strong presence in the industry and VC circles, they can introduce you, giving you a better chance to present yourself effectively. Your top contacts can include startup founders, partners, and industry leaders.

My most significant career moves in financial services came through network referrals, not job applications. Cultivate your connections—they often open doors to opportunities that formal processes can't.

Working out of your local entrepreneur center can also help you meet founders who might connect you. Don’t shy away from cold outreach either—that’s how I landed a job and connected with several funds. To consider: The presentation you create should be to the point and industry-specific. For example, the pitch deck for a new-age Gen Z product company will look quite different from that of a luxury brand—perhaps more vibrant and lively for the former, and more sophisticated and premium for the latter.

If you’re a technical founder, don’t get lost in the science—while it’s exciting for you and me, it’s just one part of the pitch.
