Understanding the audience is paramount in venture capital, as stakeholders range from savvy investors to entrepreneurs who may be less versed in financial intricacies. Tailoring visualizations ensures that complex data is accessible and actionable. For instance, when presenting to seasoned investors, emphasizing long-term growth potential through trend analysis can be effective, while entrepreneurs might benefit from visualizations that highlight immediate operational insights. Always align visual content with the decision-making processes of the audience.

Knowing your audience is by far the most important thing to do when you present your VC data. Avoid jargons and acronyms that the audience may not be familiar with. You also need to keep in mind the amount of time you have to present this visualization. Try to simplify it as much as possible without ambiguity.

I like to follow 2 main categories in my KPI's / metrics: 1) Deal score (1-10) - to match it with geography, sectors and sub-sectors, and understand my strength as an investor sourcing deals. 2) Reasoning of declining - to help me focus on deal types and funnel better deals.

It is crucial to analyze data from different angles, because visualization could be biased in case you initially select somewhat wrong benchmark. In order to do that, I'd advise to use the following principles: - Choose a convenient tool that will help you to quickly adjust your data, add more information, run different types of analysis; - Run several types of analysis and tests; - Compare with benchmarks on similar analysis; - Make sure you really use data in the analysis, not backdate thesis with beautiful illustrations.

I select visualization types that best suit the data story I'm telling. Line charts for growth trends, bar graphs for competitive analysis, pie charts for market segments - each choice is about maximizing impact and clarity.

Picking the right type of visualization is as crucial as the data itself. Each type of chart or graph has its language and emotion. Your choice must align with what your data is trying to say. Histograms or box plots for distribution, scatter plots or line charts for relationships, pie or stacked bar charts for composition, line or area charts for time series, maps or heat maps for geographical data – each tells a different story. It’s not about using fancy or complicated charts; it’s about using the right tool for the job. The effectiveness of your data visualization hinges on this choice.

I think to keep things simple and easy to understand a bar chart with trend line is best option to visualise data easily. Through the sizes of bar and design of trend line anyone can understand the data faster because bar charts are one of the easiest way to analyse stuff where relevant.

Select the types of visualizations that best highlight patterns and trends in the data. Bar charts, line charts, heat maps, and scatter plots may be more appropriate depending on the context.

Slavishly adhering to design principles can be a creativity killer. Sure, consistency in colors and symbols is important, but don’t let these rules handcuff your visual storytelling. Fonts and labels need to be clear, but if they’re not adding an element of engagement, they’re just window dressing. And when it comes to scales, axes, and legends, accuracy is essential, but don’t stop there – use them to make your data pop. White space and alignment are more than just organizational tools; they’re your canvas. Don’t let them become a straitjacket for your creativity. In VC, your visualizations need to do more than just convey data – they need to leave a lasting impression. Aim for a daring balance between clarity and creative flair.

The step to test and refine data visualizations is where good becomes great. Don’t just glance over your visuals; scrutinize them for errors and ambiguities. Every element must be crystal clear and accurate. Feedback isn’t just useful, it’s essential. It’s not about getting a pat on the back; it’s about uncovering blind spots and weaknesses. Use insights from colleagues and mentors to elevate your visualizations, not just tweak them. In the final review, be ruthlessly critical. Ask: Does this truly communicate my message? Is it engaging? Data visualization from any tool is as good or bad as the quality of data input (ha! no rocket science), but the quality of data is usually purest at it's source and then as we start processing it either improves or corrupts depend on many factors. If the tool you use for visualization is also the tool where you manage those processes, is the ideal situation to be in, but a rare one. Very few tools in VC world are actually good at both managing the business process having data in it's purest form and help with visualization, one that I am aware of is TheInvestorNet.

At Startup Wise Guys we use Airtable to maintain our portfolio investments and reporting for LPs. The tool allows us to create different visualizations of our data which we can add to a “special page” created using Airtable only. This page is shared with LPs to help them understand how the funds are performing. This save us the trouble of using multiple tools for reporting purposes.
