I had switched from engineering to business as I dislike the idea of spending my time looking at equipment and monitors. But, more so I felt that my strength that I could better use is really in creating relationships and exploring opportunities. I believe one's clear direction becomes clearer after your first full time job. But, the education system globally normally would force us to choose some field of study as young as 16 years old, if you are following the norm of pre-employment training (PET), it may not always be what you want to do for life. My view is take a major business course if you are unsure, although it's a more general field, at a minimum you are still equipped to find some job, you can decide your true calling after.

A student should first be exposed to diverse subjects for the first six months or a year at least. Let the student dabble with these subjects and be free to locate the area of his/her passion to move in the road of his/her choice. In this high-strung world, a student should always be FREE to change and opt for another subject if one choice fails to work out. Acute stress and rigidity of rules in this very competitive world along with social/familial expectations petrify many students, leading to inability to perform despite a very high IQ. Every student must be allowed to exercise the right to "choose", fail and choose the correct path again. Let there not be a feeling that one has reached a dead end.

When one is unsure about which path to be followed; one should get started by looking for the deep rooted interests he/she possess. One's interests, guide one's actions. Finding the things that excite and inspire our minds and call for immediate action is the fundamental approach towards getting clarity in life.

Today the youth is multi-passionate. However, some passions are not compelling enough to make a career out of it. Passion is a feeling of intense enthusiasm towards something or some action or work that one is good at in alignment to the values, personality and being. One needs to find a pathway to get a sense of meaning, impact and purpose. Passion comes from enacting one's purpose. When one enacts one's purpose, they will find the career pathway in life and this will help to find the right major.

Identifying your strengths is a subject that cannot be overemphasized because more often people are caught in areas where they don't fit in and they become like square pegs in round holes. Take an inventory of the things, subject areas that interest you, the passion you have and what you do incredibly well. My suggestion is to pull up LinkedIn and search for individuals who attended your college or university and hold a career or job title you’re interested in. Then, look at the roles they had along the way. You might be surprised by the diverse paths people have taken to get from where you are to where you want to go.

Contrary to the initial question, I don't believe in the 'perfect major' since it doesn't consider how our interests change over time. However, an presumably easy way to edge into an industry is through a training or clerical role, where perhaps there isn't so much a focus on academia, but more on gaining experience.

Without a doubt, more ‘open’ or flexible majors offer greater adaptability, but the first step into your career can be more challenging. If that’s the case, consider seeking lower barriers to entry through internships, sponsored projects/research, or job shadowing. Once you’re in the field, the skills developed in these more flexible majors can be powerful assets for your next steps.

The best advice one can give any prospective student looking to embark on their #highereducation journey is study what you love! The majority of employers do not recruit on degree discipline & most large organisations employ across the board - engineering firms need accountants, HR, IT & marketing as well as engineers. The same is true of accounting firms employing engineers! Do what you love because you will get better results & in interviews your enthusiasm for your specialty will shine through in the same way as it will for your dream job!
