In my experience, choosing between analytical and creative problem-solving hinges on the problem's nature. When ample data is available, an analytical strategy is favored, but creative approaches shine in information-limited scenarios. In my experience, when solving problems there is a great Japanese method called F.E.C.C. F= Fact (Problem statement) E= Emergency Countermeasures (How to solve it immediately) C= Root Cause (What caused this?) C= Fundamental Countermeasures (How to prevent it from happening in future?) This is way not only you can control the damage on going rather you will be able to prevent it from happening in future.

In order to understand the complexity of the problem, we need to know its scope and scope. By using techniques such as the thinking matrix, we can find out the complexity of the problem. On the other hand, problem solving always starts with analytical methods, and depending on its complexity, the need for creativity and innovation is determined. Therefore, we need both analytical and creative methods in solving complex problems.

IMHO Sometimes the most complex of problems have the easiest solutions and to get to the end of the bridge you just keep simplifying it and have a new perspective to it. Ask yourself on why would this solution work with enough justifications in order to come to a conclusion. Sometimes the answer is visible when you look at things different from another POV.

I don't agree that Creative Thinking needs to be 'novel' or 'original'; though I would say it needs to be deceptively intuitive. Creative Thinking also doesn't need to be solved just for vague problems. My answer would be quite long-winded, so the example I'll give for those to search for are the different ways basic Arithmetic has been taught in other cultures and time periods.

If the problem is about fostera culture of innovation across the organisation, it might require creative and diverse solutions not exactly analytical. However, if the problem is to understand the communication breakdowns in team meetings, it can be solved through an analytical lens.

In my experience, it often takes a bit of creativity and analytics to identify if there truly is a problem and not just user error or lack of knowledge. Once a problem has been verified and clearly defined, we often lean on creative thinking to hypothesize possible causes and then rely on analytical thinking to test these hypothesis. Once the root cause is identified, we often need to utilize creative thinking if a simple solution is not currently available with the data, tools, or resources we have.

In my view, analytical and creative are not substitutes rather are complementary. Being analytical helps the person in dissecting the problem using logic and facts. Being creative allows them to generate multiple innovative solutions to solving the real problem. Analytical skills help in selecting the best solution out of all the creative solutions generated and again creativity helps in maneuvering the evolving situation and managing contingencies during the execution phase.

After I've gathered data, done a SWOT analysis, flow charts, etc., and have moved into brainstorming I always ask "How can I solve this?". In this process, I can usually find multiple solutions and then choose the best answer or mix the best parts from all of the different "hows". This allows for both analytical and creative minds to work together to find the best possible solution!

Additional ways to prepare for brainstorming are through mindset framing exercises. Examples from Annie Duke's book, Thinking in Bets, are Backcasting and Pre-mortem. These two together allow exploration of possibilities towards a goal from opposing perspectives - negative and positive.

IMHO any problem could be solved in either way depending on the person working on it, because the brain functions differently for each approach and hence depends on the individual. But, in engineering organization, most of the time the expectation is a problem be solved in systematic manner. There is no way to say a problem only has to be solved in a specific style.

When performing problem solving as a management consultant, I found most efficient to start with a short creative thinking session with the team. If the problem seemed complex or time-consuming to solve, I liked to ask them to "think as a very lazy person: how would you come around this problem differently?". To balance your solution between analytical and creative elements, it helps thinking about the stakeholders involved in this problem, and the potential audience you will have to convince with your solution.

Whether to think in the analytical way or in a creative way is completely depends upon the problem that we are going to solve maybe we need the both approaches to get the best possible solution but there is another way of thinking which is the first principal thinking in first principal thinking we examine the fundamentals of the problem and find out the root cause by which the problem exits once we clear the root cause we can implement the both analytical and thinking approaches in more efficient manner. basically it is the prerequisite before deciding which approach to follow on the given particular problem.

This is not an “or” question. It is an “and” question. When solving complex problems, you need to be creative AND analytical. Being creative helps generate new ideas and approaches. Being analytical allows you to focus on details and track progress. When building teams, it’s helpful to be conscious of which team members tend to lean toward creative approaches and those who lean toward analytical approaches. The combined diversity in approaches will lead to better outcomes.

Must have a thorough and disciplined process for your thought matrix. This process must be robust and honed via thousands of hours of practice. Only a thorough first step in analysis (should/will) indicate the need for a creative approach.

Both Analytical & Creative skills go hand in hand. Better to consider them subset of each other. One wouldn't be able to improve their analytical skills without sharpening their creative thinking. The mode of thinking would enable to come up with different possible paths to solve a problem. But it's the expertise of a person that helps to choose the appropriate path.
