You're torn on the length of your resume. How do you decide what content to include?

Nope. Target your search. That which appears in your resume should support your qualifications for a well-thought fairly narrow set of potential roles. If you are a senior executive in manufacturing for Fortune 500 companies with global experience, your target is similar companies in similar roles of similar sizes. If you are a new grad with a degree in public relations and communications, and many of your classroom projects focused on the financial services industry, your target is the financial services industry. Turning this into rocket science is a way of getting people to pay for rocket fuel and rocket fuel boosters. Companies "look where the light is", and that is people who have experience in similar industries/similar roles.

Tailoring your resume to each job application is essential for maximizing your chances of landing an interview. By carefully analyzing job descriptions and prioritizing relevant skills and experiences, you demonstrate a keen understanding of the employer's needs. A concise and focused resume that highlights your most recent and applicable qualifications sends a strong message that you are a serious candidate who has taken the time to research the company and the role.

Never sacrifice content for resume length. If the content is relevant and not redundant then it belongs on the resume. Ask yourself what story you're trying to tell the job description and let that inform how much content you should include. The reality is that the last 7-10 years are ultimately what matters, but don't sacrifice part of your story if you don't have to!

When in doubt, leave it out. If you are unsure of how much to leave on the resume, or if your earlier information should be removed, chances are, it should be. I see clients stress over whether jobs from twenty years ago should be added. If they don't pertain to what you do right now, leave them out. Or, if they do, create an Early Career Summary and summarize your earlier information to create a more streamlined, interesting read.

Some industries REQUIRE that you account for ALL of your time since you left school. In those cases you don't have the luxury of leaving out anything older than 10 years. BUT you do not have to spend a great deal of time on those old jobs. You need to find a way to account for them without focusing on them. You can create a section called "Earlier Experience" Here you need only list the company, your role and the dates. Then move on.

A list of 7-8 skills is good enough in a resume for one job. Now how do you decide what to put in? A good mix would be 3-5 hard skills, 2 software and 1-2 soft skills. The skills are picked up from the job description of course. Here are some tips: 1. Add them only when you have them. 2. Justify them on your work experience, summary and education/courses. 3. Soft skills can be added here, maximum 2 have matched keywords but again it should be used strategically in the work experience. For example- Finance Role Financial Modelling | Revenue Forecasting | Data Analysis | Bloomberg Dashboard Proficiency | Valuation Techniques | Microsoft Excel | PowerPoint | Analytical Thinking | Attention to Detail

A recruiter or hiring manager may spend roughly six seconds screening resumes, so the more "scannable" you make your document, the better. This is why the "skills" section on your resume is so important. It quickly shows the hiring manager that you have the skills they are looking for. Review the position description, and select around 7-10 skills maximum to include in this section. It should be a good mix of hard and soft skills directly aligned to the job. If the job is highly technical in nature, you can have a separate "technical proficiency" section, showcasing your relevant tech skills. ??Caution: make sure you actually have the skills you list. Make sure to back these up in your professional profile and experience section.

Pls note that while adding your skill set is unique and transparent. Make sure to highlight all the skills set and master in it. Hiring manager and recruiter have only less time to find your skills based on the requirements. Elaborate at the time of interview and explain in details. Be specific on your goal and how you achieve in that skill set

Summarize roles and responsibilities rather than listing every task. Focus on key accomplishments and skills that make you stand out.

The skills section should clearly identify your hard and soft skills that are relevant to the position for recruiters. The quicker the recruiter can find what skills are relevant to the positions, the better chance you will be contacted for an interview. If your skills can't be quickly viewed, you will be eliminated quickly, because remember the recruiter is likely to be viewing hundreds of resumes, and doesn't have the time to do any guess work regarding your experience.

People often try to include every course, training, and learning experience they've had in their career on their resume. Adding too much information can actually hurt their chances. It distracts recruiters from the key qualification, leading to rejection. What to Include: 1. Undergrad & Postgrad Degree: Include your major, institution, and graduation date. 2. Certifications/Courses/Trainings: Mention things that supports your candidacy. 3. Dates & Locations: This is a must! Optional: Class 12 and 10: Include only if you’re a fresher; for experienced professionals, it’s generally not necessary. What to Avoid: Unrelated Certifications & Courses: Exclude that do not directly enhance your qualifications for the role.

Include sections such as Professional Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, and Certifications. If relevant, add sections for Publications, Projects, or Volunteer Work.

It's always better to have additional certificates based on your experience with education. Certifications will give you added advantage while you search job. Sometimes client requested to have specific certification like PMP, SHRM and more.

The key with your educational background is relevancy of your education to the position, and the minimum requirements that will be included in the job posting. One of the challenges that I see with clients, especially well educated ones, is they will include higher education such as a PhD or a master's degree, but the position only mentions the candidate requires a bachelor's degree. The problem when a client provides more education is that the recruiter will think they are over qualified for the job, and be more likely to screen the client out of the running for the position, because s/he may believe the candidate will be less likely to stay more long term in the position.
