It is disturbing to me , when I see current PCB builds for chips like FPGA's , and Routing Engines, and SIB's (Switching Interface Boards) go cheap on the on-board crystal oscillators. I see nothing but problems and broken PCIe clocks. In my day, we used external Cesium Beam and other Frequency Synthesized sources for external phase locked frequency references. We even do this on contemporary communications space craft. I see no reason why modern data centers could not be set up to run this way. It would solve a lot of problems .
