Practice. There is no magic solution here. Just practice in changing the settings quickly. Anticipate the changes you might encounter, and practice, practice.

In these situations use a camera with programmable presets, like the Nikon z6 and z7 series. U1 is set to my continuous light settings, U2 is set to my strobe settings, U3 is set to my remote trigger settings. Easy peasy.

Start by thinking about the variables you can’t control for a particular shoot. Ie, mixed, changing lighting, or candid shots of people with lots of fast action or movement. Then think about which camera settings will need to be rapidly adjusted (it’s often just one or two, not all of them). Let the camera control settings that you don’t mind if they change. You control the others. Sometimes this is manual mode; other times it might be one of the ‘semi-auto’ priority modes. Auto ISO can be helpful at times as well. Auto white balance is almost always a great option for candid or mixed light environments. Whatever you dial in for best camera modes, lots of practice is the only way to get really comfortable and fast.

Know Your Gear: Familiarize yourself with your camera’s layout and settings before the shoot. This will help you make quick adjustments without fumbling. Use Custom Settings: Set up custom modes for different scenarios (e.g., portraits, landscapes, low light) so you can switch quickly without needing to adjust each setting manually. Practice in Advance: Before the shoot, practice adjusting settings like ISO, aperture, and shutter speed in various lighting conditions to build muscle memory.
