In my experience any successful retail business is built on four pillars: great locations, great people, great processes and resilient/affordable supply chains. As the successful owner/operator of a small scale retail business, any franchisor want-to-be needs to (I) assess the scalability of its successful business against those 4 metrics and close any gap , (ii) identify ways to operationalize its “tacit knowledge” so that it can be transferred outside its own ecosystem and (iii) find ways to select the right partners for its concept (there is no such thing as a fit-all franchise).

Franchising your business is a completely different business model than your actual business so do your due diligence in great detail. There are so many wonderful franchise experts who will gladly share information with you to help you decide. You can also hire a franchise focused business coach to help you decide if you are ready or if it's the right fit. Their experience and expertise are sure to guide you in the right direction!

The most important question to answer is, "Are you personally ready as a the owner of a brand to get into franchising?" Franchising tests you in ways no other business model can. Every single franchise is an investor in your business although he might not have equity in the brand. But he is investing his hard earned money on your brand. You are answerable to him and accountable for the success of his store. You have to be available for discussions, problem-solving etc. And each franchise is going to be a different character. So, you need to steel yourself and mentally prepare to deal with a range of different characters

Franchising Is exciting & can be very rewarding. But it is definitely not for everyone!! Self employment is not the same thing as being a franchisor. Think long and hard before you begin the journey... and find reputable sources to help you. I have seen horrible FDDs and absolutely that inhibits growth.

To be ready to franchise: 1. You need to have a clear unique selling proposition (if u remove your brand name and add your competitor’s name, will it be different?) 2. You need to be making money (don’t use franchising to cover your cash burning!) 3. To have systems & proceeses in place (fully documented & easy to execute) 4. To be ready to let go of control (which is not always easy) 5. I think another, really important perspective to add here, is to make sure that you're ready to run a franchise business. That may sound obvious, but once you franchise, your day to day job is going to change significantly. You're no longer working in the business you've been growing. Suddenly, you're in the position of almost a consultant or business coach. Alongside marketing and selling a professional business opportunity, you're going to be guiding people through the process of setting up and running that business. You may be providing a website and other services that you may not have direct experience in. Hiring a strong team will put you on the right track to deliver on your promises.

Researching a market is more than the desktop warrior research. Have you site visited your top 5 competitors locations across multiple markets? Have you analyzed footprints, observed their store operations, and read all of the reviews? Have you downloaded their franchise offerings and devoured them? Look for ops manuals (you'd be surprised what you can find). Bury yourself in the deep work. What is the unfair advantage? Who are your franchisee avatars? Where have your competitors opened their last 25 locations? What are their Franchisee renewal rates? What is their YoY profitability per unit growth? What are the biggest complaints from their franchisees and customers? What opportunities do those concerns create to differentiate? BE CURIOUS!

At least two units out of three must be profitable. Once a business has reached the above milestones, Franchising can be an option, albeit ensuring that the quality processes are not compromised. Establish a good and competitive franchisee contract first. Then attract possible affiliates. There are online platforms and online and on person expos that can help. Write it as well on your website and on LinkedIn. You supposed to have an age that can help with the process. I normally ask possible candidates about their Bp which must include as well a market study. If they haven’t ready I will give them one week to do it and by the time our Business analyst will do the same research. Franchisee must be aware of all the financial efforts that they will incur and in how long they can expect a break even. Once you select your franchisee, foresee a training in the head office, one in one of your franchisee and one in their own agency

The number one determination of franchise readiness is what kind of return on investment the franchisee can and should realize. The first thing I would do is run projected P&Ls for the franchisees and see when they will get a full return on the investment and how they can make beyond that during the term of the agreement. Consider all the fees the have to pay you and the fact that they do not have the expertise and may not perform as well as your company-owned location. Happy Franchisees = successful Franchisors. I agree it’s critical that franchisees get a respectable ROI … but please don’t overlook the franchisor’s need for reward as well… it’s quite common to see franchisors struggling to build a sustainable business model. Don’t think that a couple of KPIs alone endorse your model because there are a host of other often ignored factors that are essential.
