You love writing, but can you write? Not everything that you like should become your career. There are some days I hate writing. But I continue to do it because I'm good at it. You need to have skills before interest to excel at copywriting.

Instead of thinking about becoming a copywriter, start writing. It doesn’t matter what. We do it all the time in short form, texts and social media posts for example. People have asked me how they start writing and earning money from it. I’m not sure anyone starts making money out the gates, that wasn’t my experience. I had to practice and decide it was something I really wanted to do. I wanted to express ideas and feelings about things I loved to people who loved the same things. Some niches are easier to break into than others, it ebbs and flows.

Copywriting's challenges are its flip side: constant learning, pushing creative boundaries, and adapting to trends. Juggling projects, deadlines, and self-doubt can be intense, but the reward is crafting impactful messages that resonate with audiences. It's a demanding path, but one paved with the satisfaction of seeing your words come to life.

The reward I value the most is being able to travel while working. I've lived all around the world while having clients and could do so indefinitely if I wanted to.

Though this may not always be the case, it's worth asking if it's possible to have a byline on a blog post or credit somewhere on the website. It’s important to learn the essential elements of effective copy and practice those before you begin to layer on other skills. A common mistake people make (by people, I mean me) is going down a rabbit hole and trying to learn all the things. Be selective, be strategic, and learn from those ahead of you.

Writing as a hobby and writing as a profession are two different things. Your hobby allows you to make mistakes but your clients don't. Pursuing writing as your career requires an in-depth understanding of 1. The language you are writing in 2. The subject 3. Different styles of writing 4. Your audience So yeah, it is a demanding field. You definitely can start it as a hobby, but to turn it into your profession, you need to constantly upgrade yourself, take reviews from experts, learn from your mistakes, and most of all read and research A LOT!

One way to build your portfolio when starting out is to write mock ups for existing brands. Practice writing ads, product descriptions, landing pages, blog posts etc... and add them to your portfolio. To secure your first client, approach small companies and offer to work for free or very little money by helping them revamp some of their copy that you think needs refreshing. Get your first real testimonials and take it from there. Platforms like Upwork and Fiverr work for some but the competition is harsh and the pay is often abysmal. It can take a while to get started. Don't expect smooth sailing in just a few months.

Are you here because you watched a video on TikTok that claims copywriting is an easy side hustle that guarantees you can make loads of money without having to do much work? Did the thought of that make you excited? Yeah?? Loads of money for doing hardly anything?? Writing a few words and stuff??? Yeah??? Yeah???? Quit now. It s more likely you’ll eat your own head than ever make it if you’re already cutting corners.

You can never be 100% sure. Even if you think you know the ins and outs. Here are a few questions to ask yourself... Does it light you up? Do you get butterflies when trying to find the right word to communicate precisely what you want? Some days might be tough but if your overall feeling is positive then you are on the right path.

Good copywriters are not good writers. They're good readers, good at persuasion, they understand human nature and human psychology. If you think you can understand that, I can tell you with certainty you can be a great copywriter.
