A favorite part of my week is Friday Morning when my leaders and I choose the weekly “Pink Unicorn” award. This is a special call out to a team member that went out of their way to display a skill or cultural behavior we are trying to spread across the team. We as a leadership team then write praise, calling out the person, calling out the behavior with a specific example and write how that helped the overall organization. We then post this in our organization wide teams chat. I love that after 2 years the engagement and celebration of praise is still meaningful across the organization. Why “pink unicorn”? When Microsoft first released the praise application in teams, telling someone they are great has a pink unicorn emoji. It stuck.

The best approach in my experience is to unite the team with a common ethos. What do you stand for as a team? By asking the team to define "What is your mission and purpose?" you align mentality and motivation. Then using a combination of all of the tools listed above appropriately and in a timely manner you maintain a positive culture. Knowing which tool to use and when requires you as a leader to understand the members of your team deeply. Use a framework such as Patrick Lencioni's Five Dysfunctions of A Team to build guardrails and set expectations of behaviour. Finally, celebrate successes, but acknowledge weaknesses. These are development areas that provide room for development and growth. Learning helps individuals to stay engaged.

Its important to understand what your team likes, what motivates them, what they look forward to after work. They should feel trusted and encouraged to share such activities with the team.

Just let them talk. Listen to their challenges. Be responsive as much as you can and try to address solutions to their pain points. Personally, I must say that I'm getting lots of ideas by sitting with my team. These insights usually translate to a proactive approach and help us achieve our individual KPIs.
