From my experience, I can tell it's not the same to choose an appropriate exam format that suits the course objectives and your objectives as a teacher than to choose an exam format that is easy and fast to grade. However, what has helped me the most is to avoid exam questions that could be easily answered by cheating or using AI, as in the case of open questions that require personalisation and avoid a single possible answer. This needs to be accompanied by rubrics and a few criteria your students are acquainted with, 2 of which must be "task achievement" and "coherence". By setting these criteria beforehand and effectively communicating this to your students, grading can become a much more accurate task.
