You’re teaching a diverse classroom. How can you ensure all students feel included?

When I teach a diverse classroom here in USA, the best way to know students is self-introduction, because I can see their faces, also I can hear their voices (accents). However, some students especially who have foreign accents tend to hesitate to introduce themselves in front of other students. In order to break the ice, I introduce myself first. Actually, I myself is a perfect example of diversity, because I am a first-generation immigrant who was born and raised in JAPAN. I have yellow skin and Asian eyes. I speak English proudly with Japanese accent. Definitely, I look different, and sound different. After my self-introduction, students willingly introduce themselves in a relaxing diverse atmosphere full of positive energy.

I’ve done this for years and it works. Students feel that they are important if you know them by name. This is difficult especially for big classes but this can be done. Mistakes will happen but the familiarity improves.

To ensure all students feel included in a diverse classroom, educators can implement various strategies to create an inclusive learning environment. Some of these strategies include: -provide a sense of belonging -offer students voice and choice -incorporate diverse perspectives -promote active listening and empathy.

Stimulate their thinking by not dishing out all the answers. Recognise that giving them the opportunity to share their perspective makes the learning experience more wholesome and memorable. Even where you disagree with their opinion, don't shoot down their ideas, as this may prevent them from sharing some other time. Address them by name respectfully and correct them politely too.

My classroom is a warm and welcoming space where students feel comfortable exploring their Jewish identity and learning the Hebrew language. The most important thing to establish a positive and supportive climate in a diverse classroom is eliminating discrimination and bullying. In order to prevent discrimination and bullying, in my self-introduction I say “I was born and raised in JAPAN. People in Japan have their own language, culture, and common sense. Because I look different, and sound different, some narrow-minded people bully and discriminate against me.” And then, I make students understand we are all different--- different appearance, color, race, culture, language, religion, and ability. In order to create a supportive and positive climate, students need to clearly know that they must not bully or discriminate against other people, just because they are different.

Set ground rules for respect together. Model tolerance consistently. Encourage sharing personal experiences and perspectives. Display diverse student work. Use texts with diverse characters. Avoid assumptions and generalizations. Be sensitive with language. Address insensitive remarks calmly as teaching moments. Collaborate on multicultural projects. Adapt instruction to various learning needs. Promote relationship building through grouping strategies. Emphasize themes of equity and social justice. Validate the assets each student brings. Make space for open dialogue. Be aware of own implicit bias. Make sure all feel recognized, heard, and welcomed. Celebrate diversity; highlight commonalities.

Accept the fact that each student is different and learning capabilities and capacities of each student is different, some learn by memorising the concepts, some by applying the concepts in their day to day life, like when I was growing up, I loved cricket, my mom would keep repeating my lessons with me when I was busy catching ball thrown against walls, shadowing batting poses. That’s where trick lies, understanding the leaning pattern of students is super critical. Bring these diverse leaning opportunities inside your classes will separate you as a teacher or choice.

Including a wide variety of materials and formats helps us to connect to the students and the different learning styles that they possess. For instance a learner who is auditory will use the auditory materials to quickly grasp the concepts while a kinesthetic learner benefits from games and activities that involve spending time away from the desk. Since all kinds of learning will be in the same class, they will absorb the most from the style that suits them but, still they will benefit from being exposed to the style that they find challenging. Eventually, it helps learners to expand their natural learning style and adapt better to challenges.

Apart from the materials and resources, teachers need to be mindful of their own choice of words while delivering lectures, asking questions, or during discussion. They should not be prejudiced towards the cognitive capabilities of any child based on his or her social or economic background. No negative comments, that could make a child question his own capabilities, should be made. Every chance to prove and improve should be provided to all individuals in a classroom, and differences in kind of talents must be celebrated.

I prefer to make ppts full of content based on some examples, appropriate diagrams and sometimes add some interactive videos that are ideal for beginners. Sometimes I also refer to some other lecture material that is very informative and catchy to understand. My ppts always have a summary format. Because human intentions are to remember the bulleted points with an understanding diagram. It is very important to receive honest feedback from each student, because students especially in diverse classroom have different abilities to understand, and because some minority students might be discriminated or bullied by other students. In order to get honest feedback from each student, teachers need to hold a 1 on 1 meeting frequently, or receive feedback letter / email from each student (and parents).

It's crucial to actively seek feedback from students about your teaching methods. Encourage anonymous written feedback to create a comfortable environment where students feel free to express their opinions without fear. After collecting feedback, it's essential for teachers to reflect on the provided insights. Identify areas for improvement without questioning students about specific feedback. Developing patience is key in this process, as it requires tolerance and continuous effort to enhance teaching behavior and knowledge. Embrace feedback as a tool for personal growth and improvement.

Currently the students of advanced technology need things in short and crisp form with more clarity visual aids. Also correlating the subjects with the current trends and practices allow the students to develop interests in continuous listening. The most difficult task now is sustaining their listening skills ??

Inclusion starts best with and through students. On a project day I observed how a student would speak in an inclusive way naturally. It creates a safe place and helps trusting eachother in learning situations. Students feel seen and acknowledged for their personal strength in new situations when changing methods and surroundings like in projects. Personal communication in problematic situation and showing empathy helps them owecoming obstacles. This way students as teachers learn together in a multidimensional way.

Set learning projects for groups (2-5) either differentiated or closely supervised with tasks appropriate to the range of aptitudes. Naturally, set clear objectives and references but allow students to devise/find their own.

When I needed help to gather insights to develop inclusitivity in my classroom I Considered teaming up with a fellow teacher to co-plan lessons, pooling diverse perspectives to cater to varied learning styles. Seek guidance from an administrator experienced in inclusive education, unlocking administrative support to implement inclusive strategies effectively. Utilize online platforms for professional development, attending webinars and forums to stay abreast of the latest inclusive teaching methodologies. Collaborate with community organizations, forging partnerships to bring external resources and diverse perspectives into the classroom. These pragmatic steps illustrate a multifaceted approach to building an inclusive learning environment.

First, identify which aspect of a "diverse classroom" this is. Are students different in learning ability, learning styles, emotional intelligence or character traits?

It requires a foundation of mutual respect and communication. Being knowledgeable about the diverse backgrounds in the classroom will not only educate the teacher but also the students.

You're not supposed to be perfect. You're supposed to be ever-growing. Keep putting in the work, especially since you're consistently listening and adjusting to and with students.

As a Community Health Worker Instructor in Las Vegas, the term “community” is literally what makes up the class. Anyone that knows LV knows we are a melting pot of diversity, so the classes are made with inclusion built in. As someone who assisted with the writing of the main curriculum used here, it was important for me to see that inclusion in the slide decks, in the homework, in the examples used. When I teach in-person I include adding exercises that allow everyone to share part of their culture with us, by bringing an artifact in, or allowing the students to hear and ask their classmates cultural questions in a safe space without harm being taken. You have to write inclusion into everything, curriculums, syllabus’, SOPs, bylaws, etc.
