You’re a teacher trying to keep your students engaged. What can you do to avoid losing their attention?

Ive been noticing that AI tools are an amazing resource in this way. One of the reasons people have a hard time personalizing instruction is they are so stressed and don’t have the mental space. With AI tools something as simple as creating readings/math problems aligned to student interests etc can be a quick win with a big impact. So often we have so many assumptions about interest, engagement etc, that using AI to free not just time but mental freedom can help better know your learners

Understanding/knowing your students is crucial. By gaining insights into their interests and backgrounds, you can tailor your lessons to be more relevant and engaging. This personalized approach not only captivates their attention but also enriches the learning experience. Anticipate their inquiries about the relevance of the material, and proactively address the inevitable "Why do I need to learn this?" questions.

Empower learners to be designers of their own learning. They should be able to identify where they are in their learning, where they are trying to get to and them be given the opportunity to design the learning path to get there! This will increase motivation by making them active rather than passive learners. The design of that pathway should be based on their interests, passions and needs.

Para empezar las clases se debe ejecutar una actividad rompe hielo, en esta los alumnos pierden el miedo, en ocasiones, se divierten con la interacción con sus pares y profesores. Generalmente, se logra detectar a aquellos alumnos que muestran mayor interés en ciertos tópicos, lo que te da luces de a donde debemos apuntar los objetivos, diversificando el nivel de dificultad y personalizando la clase para llegar a toda la audiencia. Una de las actividades que recomiendo es Mentimeter donde tienen un tiempo establecido para responder, al igual que un Kahoot, o un Escape Room que vaya orientado a lo holístico, más que lo académico.

Utilize multi-modal learning: Integrate multimedia elements (videos, simulations), and interactive activities (polls, quizzes) alongside lectures to cater to diverse learning styles and maintain cognitive engagement.

Encourage metacognition: Regularly prompt students for self-reflection on learning strategies, introduce self-assessment tools, and encourage discussions on problem-solving approaches.

Al iniciar una clase, luego de romper el hielo con alguna actividad, se debe abordar lo que llamamos “activación de conocimientos previos”. Lo anterior, hace sentir al estudiante de que, “no todo lo que me van a ense?ar hoy es desconocido, también vengo con un bagaje de conocimiento que puede ser un aporte en mí clase”. Es decir, conocer lo que ellos saben, para luego asignar los desafíos que tendremos en ese periodo lectivo. Elegir los objetivos en conjunto con los estudiantes los hace sentir parte del proceso de aprendizaje. Una vez que se haya consolidado la lista de “lo que aprenderemos en esta unidad” se deben dejar esos objetivos a la vista, donde los mismos alumnos pueden ir marcando y visualizando sus logros en colectivo.

Al contrario de lo que muchos piensan, los alumnos no siempre disfrutan trabajar con tecnología. La tecnología es una motivación, un vehículo que conduce el aprendizaje consolidado, para convertirlo en una práctica lúdica de lo que han aprendido. Sin embargo, he descubierto que trabajar al aire libre, en clases que se enfoquen en la expresión corporal y movimiento, son mucho más atractivas e invitan a nuestros alumnos a salir de la caja (la sala de clases común), ese lugar donde históricamente han recibido clases magistrales, pero que día a día, la rutina los va desmotivando gradualmente.

Leverage technology strategically: Implement Learning Management Systems (LMS) for blended learning, gamification elements to boost motivation, and collaborative tools (whiteboards, breakout rooms) for active participation.

In my experience as a teacher and a consultant, this is one of the best ways to create engagement, either in a face-to-face classroom environment or in an online learning environment. “Learning takes place in conversations”, it is as students are given the opportunity to interact, discuss & hold conversations around a topic, that they really learn. This becomes more engaging when they have to work in groups & collaborate to get a project done. This is even more important in an online environment, where students can easily leave their devices connected while they themselves are not following. Constantly making the students interact, through digital assessments, interactions, etc will ensure that the students stay engaged and keep learning.

One thing I’ve found helpful is to have a welcoming environment. Who wouldn't stay where they're welcomed? To help create a welcoming environment a positive classroom culture is to be practiced where every participant feels valued and heard.

Employ formative assessments: Utilize short quizzes, polls, or peer evaluations (clickers) throughout the lesson to gauge understanding, adjust instruction, and maintain focus.

La interacción es un punto valioso en el aula, se deben realizar tertulias permanentes que inspire a los estudiantes a generar aprendizajes colectivos, que consoliden vínculos y conexiones humanas, muy necesarias en el ámbito educativo. En otro artículo hable sobre la importancia de “humanizar la tecnología” que en vez de que nos separe en la distancia, nos una. Un buen ejemplo de ello son las distintas herramientas disponibles en el mercado para trabajar de manera remota, pero en conjunto. Un ejemplo de lo anterior podría ser Google Docs, Sheets, entre otras herramientas que posee el Workspace de Google para fortalecer los lazos del trabajo colaborativo, sin importar las distancias.

Keep communication open with the class .Ask the students their opinions on the subject which you are teaching however inane the opinion may be ,still respect the student's opinion .Take a few minutes break talk about their life & their life goals ,after the break start teaching again .I feel that keeps their mind from wandering unless the child is a habitual daydreamer !??

La creatividad es un elemento que permite que los estudiantes puedan expresar sus ideas a través de materiales, actividades o dinámicas en la que puedan ver cuanto han aprendido, mientras aplican en la vida real lo que han logrado consolidar en clases. La diversión es interesante, yo siempre digo que “sin emoción no hay aprendizaje”, lo único que va a garantizar una conexión con tus estudiantes es que ellos sientan la emoción de llegar a tu clase, que se den cuenta que el docente tomó tiempo de su agenda para preparar un juego o actividad dise?ada especialmente para ellos. Hay varias herramientas, entre ellas mí favorita, la gamificación en aula. Concretamente, se aprende mejor con emoción, y más aún a través del juego.
