1 What is collaborative problem solving?

Collaborative problem solving is a method of learning that involves groups of students tackling challenging tasks or problems that require them to utilize their knowledge, skills, and creativity. This could take the form of projects, simulations, games, experiments, or case studies. The key features of collaborative problem solving are that the problem should be authentic, relevant, and meaningful for the students and curriculum; complex and open-ended with multiple solutions; and provide students with autonomy and choice in how they approach and solve it. Additionally, students should work in small groups of 3-5 in order to communicate, cooperate, and support each other; while the teacher serves as a facilitator, guide, and coach rather than a direct instructor or evaluator.

One of best way to do this is to give the students engaging topics. The students should be divided into groups. Now the groups shouldn't just consist of the kingfishers but also the weavers and herons. In that case, all the members of the team are carried along. The teacher should also be able to contribute and assist with clues when need be.

As a high school mathematics teacher, I mostly use this problem-solving technique. Here are some steps to accomplish it. -Clearly elaborate the problem and different possible options to solve it. -Make groups 2-3 students in each and name them a, b, c and so on. -Assign each group different problem. -Facilitate each group. -You will see every group progressing and at maximized learning. -At the end you will see every group confident and motivated with possible solution.

Collaborative problem solving makes the students to feel inclusive in the decision making. Like a project method of teaching, if students are given a task they are expected to make decision among themselves concerning the task. It also encourages team spirit. The idea of collaborative problem solving is a simulation of what happens in the real world. When properly executed, it does more good to the students.

Too often the dynamic of a classroom is dictatorial. Even when this approach works, there is a sense that the teacher and their students are in opposition. When implemented successfully, collaborative problem-solving imbues students with agency, responsibility, and respect. Like any utopian democracy, the goal is to make your students shareholders in the success of the classroom. If students are permitted to invest their ideas and solutions into the group, they will also be more invested in the delivery and outcomes of the course itself.

3 How to plan for collaborative problem solving?

Before you implement collaborative problem solving in your classroom, you need to plan carefully and consider several factors that can affect its success. These factors include the learning objectives and outcomes, the problem design, the group formation, the group roles and norms, the resources and materials, the scaffolding and support, and the assessment and evaluation. You must ensure that the problem is authentic, relevant, meaningful, complex, and open-ended for your students' level, interest, and background. Additionally, group size, composition, and dynamics must be balanced. Resources and materials should be provided or let the students access to help them solve the problem. Lastly, formative and summative assessment methods should be used to measure their individual and group outcomes.

While teaching, I practice the following: Plan collaborative problem-solving by selecting engaging topics. Form diverse student groups, and design tasks that require teamwork. Clearly define objectives, encourage open communication, and provide guidance as needed. Evaluate outcomes to refine future collaborative activities, and foster a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.

It is important to make the project relatable and not something far-fetched. Teachers should also misuse this collaborative problem solving by shifting all their work loads on students as project to work on.

4 How to facilitate collaborative problem solving?

As a teacher during a collaborative problem solving activity, your role is to facilitate, not to instruct. This means creating a positive and supportive learning environment, where students feel safe, respected, and valued. You should also monitor and intervene when necessary to help the students stay on track, solve conflicts, and improve their skills. To facilitate collaborative problem solving effectively, you should set clear goals and expectations before the activity. Encourage and praise the students for their efforts, progress, and achievements. Observe and listen to the students' interactions, discussions, and actions. Ask and prompt them to clarify, explain, justify, or elaborate on their ideas. Model and demonstrate the skills and behaviors you want them to learn. Mediate and resolve any conflicts or issues that may arise among the students or within the groups.

One of the best models for how to do this well is in the instruction of improvisational theater. The teacher set the ground rules and the goal of the scene, and would "side coach" the actors as they performed and learned. A key principle in improvisation is saying "Yes, and" as opposed to disagreeing. It is a game and a show that only works when the actors are collaborating. This way, it is much easier to see when collaboration breaks down. The principle of side coaching is very useful as well as it is designed to keep the actor in the scene (and collaborating) as much as possible while being nudged by the teacher toward both increased collaboration and the goal of the scene.

5 How to reflect on collaborative problem solving?

It is important to reflect on the process and outcomes of a collaborative problem solving activity, both individually and collectively. Reflection can help consolidate learning, identify achievements, recognize challenges, and plan for improvement. Debriefing and discussing with the class or in smaller groups is a great way to start. Afterwards, review and evaluate the students' work and performance, providing them with clear feedback on individual and group outcomes. Journaling and writing about their reflections can also be beneficial, as well as showcasing and sharing their work with a wider audience. Invite the students to present their work and solutions to the audience, encouraging them to ask questions, comment, or give feedback.
