Science communication isn't about impressing your audience with fancy jargon. It's about sharing knowledge in a clear way that leads to action. Of course, some audiences appreciate the jargon, but many don't, so make sure you understand your audience. Are you talking to a room full of PhD researchers? Business executives? Regulatory experts? Patient advocates? Maybe even a mixed group of all of these different types of stakeholders? Each audience requires a different approach, but even for the most technical groups, remember that less is more. They don't need every little detail (that's what supplemental slides and Q&A sessions are for). Choose no more than 3 key ideas you want your audience to walk away with, and craft a concise narrative.

When meet with a newer biotech, you never know the level of expertise your counterpart might have, so, it is better I focus on making things simple and clear. I might say, “Think of our lab solutions like refining your supply chain… at Avantor, we remove challenges to boost your results.” I try (as much as possible) to skip the technical jargon and highlight what matters to the customer: faster drug development, lower costs, and smoother operations. Using a visual or example, I show how Avantor’s products fit seamlessly into their process to solve real problems. By focusing on ROI and how we can help them stay competitive, I make it clear that Avantor is more than a supplier… we’re a partner they can trust to drive innovation and success.
