You're either funny or not and you should have enough self-awareness to already know who you are, usually because people told you were funny. Of course you'd have to trust those people are telling you the truth. Those are the people that matter. Is a huge difference between people laughing at you or not or with you with you or not.

Practice the joke (I prefer humorous story) till it rolls off your tongue smoothly. NEVER EVER say "let me tell you a joke." If they don't laugh, you're sunk. Just tell the joke or story as part of your presentation. If they laugh, smile and allow a few seconds for the audience to do so. If they don't, just keep speaking as if it was not a joke or funny story. You have to practice and you also have to be nimble as you present.

It is important that plenty of practice is done and rehearse in front of people who will be honest. But more important is having another line to deliver is the joke falls flat. This can be hard because it can be painful that the laugh did not come but often the greater laugh will come from the recovery line and not the first flat one.

Focusing on the audience will help you recognize those magical moments—moments where humor just happens. Embrace those moments and draw them out for your audience. It could be someone saying something funny, something funny happening in the moment, or even something you said that you didn’t initially realize was funny but comes off that way in the moment. Relax. You've got this! Stay present and find the humor. Make sure it’s appropriate, but often, those spontaneous moments are the funniest of all.
