Start with clear goal of your project. When you are clear what scientific question you need to answer consider how key technologies can help or fall short. If you want to analyze long parts of genome or full genome/chromosome you will look for long read approach (PacBio, Nanopore). If you want to do some field application you will choose Nanopore no question asked. But if you need massive throughput and high accuracy 'classic' short reads will be your pick. Most of platforms has mature analytical software so if you stick to mainstream solution you are safe. If you need something more tailored - like targeted sequencing - research the software first!

Currently most mainstream strategies (RNAseq, scRNA, WGS etc.) has a lot of well maintained software. If you want a quick start use ready to go solutions: nf-core pipelines, Galaxy platform or software recommended by a platform provider (eg. Illumina DRAGEN). You can also research benchmark studies that compare tools to look for similar usages and make educated choice. Finally meet with data analysis professionals. The software and algorithm development right now is so rapid that it may be hard to keep the pace, especially when it's not your area of focus. Use some consultancy and decide if you want to go through it on your own or outsource.
