You're swamped with urgent calibration requests. How do you decide which troubleshooting tasks to prioritize?
Inundated with calibration requests, prioritizing becomes crucial. Try these tactics to manage your workflow effectively:
- Assess the impact: Gauge which tasks affect the most critical operations or the largest number of users.
- Estimate time-to-resolution: Prioritize tasks you can resolve quickly to maximize throughput.
- Communicate transparently: Keep stakeholders informed about progress and expected timelines.

We don’t calibrate things per say in my industry, but to me it comes down to two things : 1) Important Tasks vs 2) Urgent Task 1) Important Tasks: What is going to be the most beneficial for the organization or yourself to achieve? Is it critical? Do that first! 2) Urgent Tasks: It would seem everything is urgent these days, but as we all know there is only so much time during the day. What do you do? The answer to this comes down to the company culture of your organization. My advice is to : Deal with one thing at a time, does your organization reward your efforts? Put in the work with long hours to achieve what most won’t. Allocate financial rewards to motivate your employees and achieve more. Common sense really!

Prioritizing of the Troubleshooting Tasks Required Understanding the Problem by ASKING the FOLLOWING questions... ? How critical is the issue? ? Does it impact many users, or is it a minor inconvenience? ? How quickly does the issue need to be resolved? ? How often does the issue occur? ? Is it a one-time problem, or does it happen repeatedly? ? What are the potential consequences of the issue? ? Does it cause data loss, service disruption, or financial loss? Implementation Techniques like following A. Eisenhower Matrix tasks based on their urgency and importance. B. MoSCoW Method prioritizes tasks based on their Must-have, Should-have, Could-have, and Won't-have status. C. Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule)

Assess impact, urgency, and safety to prioritize troubleshooting in optical fiber. Start with issues affecting critical services or multiple users, like major fiber cuts or high-loss links. Next, address high-priority clients and regulatory compliance needs. Use OTDR and power meter tests to diagnose faults efficiently. Consider available resources, technician skill level, and resolution time. Balance proactive maintenance with urgent repairs to prevent future failures. Communicate priorities clearly to the team to optimize workflow and minimize downtime.
