As an Engineering Manager I have faced this many times. Firstly I'll check if its a common occurance, or it happens 1 out of 10 times. Its rare, congratulations! I have a great project management workflow. If all sprints are on time- it means people have less work! If it happens every other sprint (or so), it means I need to change something. In my experience it's really important to access the available software and platform services inside the organisation. Conduct initial market research and feasibility study.

Always choose thoes technologies that support quick development. For example if you choose node.js for backend instead of developing in a framework like express or nest.js select a headless solution like strapi. And same goes with frontend choose library like shadcn ant design etc instead of making everything from scratch

For the best coding practicies and standard follow these rules. 1. Synchronize the workflow every team member should have same ide, extensions, formater etc. 2. Setup a boiler plate and define rules. 3. Work in the seprate branches 4. Conduct code reviews

We have implemented specific design guidelines for development. It's really important to follow specific best practices inside big projects to avoid refactoring efforts and focus on reusablity.

In my perspective, leveraging automation tools is paramount to streamline the application development workflow effectively. By automating repetitive tasks like building, deploying, testing, and monitoring code, developers can save valuable time and energy. Whether it's using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps for workflow automation, or Selenium, Cypress, or Appium for testing automation, these tools empower developers to execute tasks faster and with greater reliability. With automation, developers can focus more on innovation and problem-solving, ultimately leading to more efficient and high-quality software development processes.

Identify the uniqueness of your application design which differentiate it from other applications. Try to automate the obvious and focus on the uniqueness.

This step, while listed last, runs concurrently with all other steps and is integral to the success of a project. It’s a continuous effort throughout the project lifecycle.

AGILE - I know it's all the rage over the past decade or so, but it is so much faster. If you want quick turnaround, work a few sprints and turn out the MVP (minimally viable product) and improve it and release it as often as possible. Daily scrums are the key to that communication between members of the team and key stakeholders when it comes to both status and priorities. Regular small releases are the key continually improving your product. Small releases can sometimes be hindered by company constraints. In that case, adopting some hybrid of Agile and Waterfall is essential.

Prioritize tasks, set clear milestones, and use efficient project management tools in your project to streamline the application development workflow.

Cut the timeline on the remaining iterations in half with a focus on deliverables that prioritize the essential components and functionality.

Lots of good ideas, but two of the most important things have been missed. (1) self-organizing, enabled teams. (2) teams organized not by function or by teams’ capabilities, but by object/ system/ application. Team organization must mirror the desired systems architecture, because of the maxim that system architectures always always move toward mirroring organizational architecture.

Look for self contained pieces of work that can be carved out and worked on in parallel by other individuals. Focus on development by contract dor those pieces, what are the inputs and outputs and expected behaviors. By finding pieces of work that can be done asynchronously and or in parallel, you maximize overall project throughput and shorten overall time on the project whole keeping the work by individuals tighter. The key is setting the expectations and keeping communication valuable to coordination and achieving the goals.
