In my view, SOAR tools might not be ideal for early-stage organizations as firms may lack the stable, standardized procedures necessary for effective automation and implementing SOAR will be an overkill. However, as an organization’s cybersecurity maturity grows and processes become more uniform, SOAR can greatly aid by automating repetitive activities and offering metrics for continuous improvement. SIEM had been rulling Cybersecurity for more than a decade now. As the Attack surface evolved around Indentity and Cloud in last couple of years, managing security Incidents and running Investigation became more complex. The very first thing as a genuine barrier is skillgap. Security Engineers must be trained to the level that they can easily Identify actual security event and can easily navigate and move this event workflow ahead. SOAR added another layer of complexity to this stack however also helped in streamlining the Incident response. Second thing that comes to the mind is incapacity of security devices/Parameters to co-relate. Last is the Integration issues with some of the SOAR tools with certain Infrastructures.

As much information you can bring to the incident, the best and faster incident resolution you may get. Some few examples of automatable tasks is to look for things like IP/DNS look-up, consolidate similar events (username or IP address activity), and in some cases you can even automate notifications.. SOAR solutions can reduce the risks introduced by human error for example, an analyst missing an important step described within a playbook that could determine if that incident could be a true or a false positive.

SOAR solutions handle events in a simplified and efficient manner. Technically they automate and orchestrate the response to security alert which reduces the dependency on security teams. Alternatively SIEM systems can also be evaluated.

SOAR is not a solution for all your analyst work but it does help to reduce the alert fatigue/ analyst workload by automating some of the tasks that will help analyst take and informed decision. With the playbooks and some custom rules, it can enrich and help priorities alerts and take care of repetitive tasks that an analyst might have to go through and thereby free up some time which can be utilised better. But again it is not like one size fits all, according to organisations maturity the level of work needed to setup might change.

Keep in mind that a SOAR is not a solution that solves all your problems. You key objective is to optimize your team instead of overwhelm them. Assess the incidents that takes most time from your team and identify repetitive tasks, so you can automate those tasks through the orchestration tool. As we implemented an orchestration solution in the past, we started with basic tasks such as IP information gathering, log collection, DNS information consolidation, among others. Even if these activities would take 5, 10 minutes on each incident, when you have 1000 incidents, we redirected our analysts to other activities (L2, rule tuning, threat intelligence)
