I'm a fan of fun team games that take us away from the work. Personally, I like to mix up the teams during the live game. The game can be Trash Basketball, What Would You Do scenarios, or even Coffee Pong - whatever the competition, the goal is to remove work status and replace it with valued team member equality. Design the challenge so it fosters group collaboration. And if there's a self-imposed leader, you can always change the rules to require all team member input for the win. I usually include prizes, a nice boost to compliance ;) End result is great people who share a common, fun experience. For example, today someone from another team needed assistance with a task typically handled by my team. Instead of explaining how to get it done myself (which I could have done), I asked one of my direct reports, who is perfectly capable of explaining the task at hand, to step in.
