Being a contributor (not just an observer) on a team that ships digital products and services with real consequences, and ideally also carries commercial responsibility for its decisions, will do wonders.

Never expect that your first design will fulfill the needs of users. When you get a real understanding of the product after several iterations you will notice a significant change in usability of the product compared to first design and that comes when you did the user testing at least with 2 users.
