1 Feedback is a gift

Feedback is a gift, not a threat. It's an opportunity to learn from others, to gain new perspectives, and to improve your performance. But feedback can also be hard to accept, especially if it's negative or unexpected. You might feel defensive, angry, or hurt. You might doubt yourself or question the intentions of the feedback giver. You might ignore or reject the feedback altogether. These reactions are natural, but they're not helpful. They prevent you from benefiting from the feedback and growing as a leader.

To overcome these barriers, you need to adopt a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that you can develop your abilities through effort, learning, and feedback. It's the opposite of a fixed mindset, which is the belief that your abilities are innate and unchangeable. A growth mindset helps you embrace feedback as a gift, not a threat. It helps you see feedback as a source of information, not a judgment. It helps you focus on what you can do to improve, not on what you can't do.

Without feedback from others you WILL NOT improve your leadership skills, or any skills for that matter. We have blind spots. We love to avoid what is uncomfortable. We want to do more of what has gotten us where we are now. Progress in leadership, and any area of life, requires one to move into the direction of your fears. Feedback is uncomfortable, but it is the first step to moving past your personal status quo.

2 Seek feedback proactively

Don't wait for feedback to come to you. Seek it proactively. Ask for feedback from your team, your peers, your managers, and your customers. Ask for feedback on specific aspects of your leadership, such as your communication, your decision making, your problem solving, or your delegation. Ask for feedback on specific situations or projects, such as how you handled a conflict, how you led a change initiative, or how you delivered a presentation. Ask for feedback on a regular basis, not just once a year.

When you seek feedback proactively, you show that you're open to learning, that you care about your performance, and that you value the opinions of others. You also increase the chances of getting honest, constructive, and timely feedback. You avoid the surprises and biases that can come from unsolicited or infrequent feedback. You also get to choose who you ask for feedback, and how you ask for it.

3 Receive feedback gracefully

Receiving feedback well can lead to building trust, rapport, and respect with the feedback giver. It also allows you to clarify the feedback, understand expectations, and identify actions to take. Conversely, receiving feedback poorly can damage relationships, create confusion, and miss out on the opportunity to improve. To receive feedback gracefully, active listening is key; pay attention and avoid interrupting, arguing or making excuses. Acknowledge the feedback and thank the giver for their time and effort. Ask open-ended questions to clarify the feedback and understand examples. Summarize the feedback in your own words and check for accuracy. Lastly, if you need time to process the feedback, ask for it politely. All of these steps will help you receive feedback gracefully.

4 Act on feedback effectively

Feedback is a valuable resource for improving your leadership skills, however it is useless unless acted upon. To act on feedback effectively, you must take responsibility for your improvement, set SMART goals, take action, and communicate your actions to the feedback giver. Start by reviewing the feedback and identifying the key areas of improvement that are relevant, important, and feasible. Prioritize these areas and decide what actions need to be taken to address them. Set SMART goals to define what you want to achieve, how you will measure success, and when you will accomplish it. Then, put your plan into action and use available resources to support you. Seek feedback along the way and adjust your actions as needed. Finally, communicate your actions to the feedback giver and thank them for their support. By taking these steps, you can improve your performance and build trust with the feedback giver. Feedback is a gift - use it wisely!

Acting on feedback, however, is rather challenging. You have to accept the compliments and acknowledge the criticism. It means accepting that all your strategies are not successful & taking responsibility. Becoming comfortable with giving credit to the right team for a great idea. By taking proper responsibility where it’s due and acting on feedback proactively, can turn a negative complaint into a positive CX & turn a positive review into brand advocacy.
