To earn your boss's trust, explicitly tie each of your strategic initiatives to the company’s goals and objectives. Whenever you report on your progress, clearly state how each initiative supports the overall company objectives. Similarly, when I competed for a $365M contract, I made sure to align every aspect of my plan with the company’s long-term growth plans. They said I won the contract because my vision for their activities going forward was so closely tied to their strategic pillars and set them up for growth success. By consistently demonstrating how your work contributes to the bigger picture, you show that you're not just focused on your own success but are genuinely committed to driving the company forward.

One angle of attack amongst many, is to better empathize with your boss from their reference point. If you better understand the problem from a level or two above you, there is a higher probability of taking a new strategy further. It will have you delivering longer term and better thought out strategies that are tangible for the group/team/firm. Most new strategies that discredit trust have a very basic or fundamental flaw with them which is brought to the surface immediately and showcase a lack of thought/care for solving the issue.

I proposed a strategy that gave away 51% of profits to our JV partner, asserting this was the most profitable and lowest risk way to enter a new market. The Board of Directors thought this was ridiculous. In order to communicate to them in “their language”, I created a financial model that highlighted our different options for entering the market. Key to this was letting the Board Members enter their revenue and census assumptions in the model itself during a Board Meeting, so they could see how the scenarios would play out. I would always like to emphasize on agile working approaches measured by OKRs. This are excellent vehicles to combine forces beyond silos and also have a leading KPI embedded contributing to an overall strategic KPI. so if someone wants to prove an impact on their work i would recommend to define a couple of OKRs and get approval to show the progress in a couple of cycles to the leaders.

The options/alternatives are countless and it is too difficult to get lost on different pathes. First question I ask when I come up with a new strategy or idea is “Why does my idea suck?” – this takes people off-guard and I get some good insight. They also stop viewing me as a “fancy MBA know-it-all”. Furthermore, it showcases that I realize there are risks and downsides to my ideas, and it helps me make mitigation plans.

BUT in a world of dramatic change of skills, tasks to be performed the question remains what ? to answer the question my advise remains to be that every individual needs to look into the future, make themselves familiar with Sustainability trends, technology forces, geo developments and any future alternatives to increase the alternative space. This always helped me and my counsellees to identify new white spots and increased the ability to make someone familiar with something they never thought it has huge potential, i.e. the entire blockchain space and/or AI space brings a lot of opportunities like the ESG space if you start to dig deeper- new horizons can be seen.
