Additional software for field mapping I’ve found useful has also included Avenza and QField. QField is relatively new and has some minor issues but overall is robust, free, and compatible with the ever improving QGIS.

I would recommend Mergin Maps for digital field capture. Highly customisable, based on QGIS (saves as gpkg) and open-source though not free except with academic license.

Additional platforms for 3D modelling include Micromine and Geoscience Analyst. Geoscience Analyst is an excellent option for someone with limited budget or interest in testing out the 3D space. Where some other 3D software lose their functionality is in the 2D space. Micromine is robust in 2D and 3D applications making it my go to for working with geological data in a complete and comprehensive workspace.

As someone who has used MapInfo pro and ArcGIS pro regularly, open source GIS (specifically QGIS) is easily comparable if not passing paid programs in quality and functionality. When using paid programs for work I often switch between QGIS and MapInfo to accommodate different tasks and take advantage of different functionalities. I’d strictly use QGIS if it weren’t for the existing workspaces at our organization and QGIS not being compatible with .gdb (can convert to ASCII for use in QGIS).
