I was manager of a Chicago store that supported artisans in other countries reach the U.S with their products. Our goal was engaging people by exposing them to the lives of people whose lives were very different from theirs. One of the things we did was hold a parade with drums. We gave people printed invitations the month before. We had prizes for the best costumes. A CEO of our parent company came to tell stories of how our business helped people get ahead who otherwise would have had no chance. We had pumpkin-decorating contests and story hours for the kids. Every month the store put out a newsletter for people on our mailing list with stories about how specific artisans' lives were being changed. It was a group effort by 4 people.

When attempting to serve an audience or community, they should have a platform to share their experiences with you. Having access to a platform to tell their stories (social media being a relatively obtainable medium) is how your people communicate their needs and experience to you. Making this storytelling platform dynamic and multimedia elevates its impact. It has been my experience with chronically ill patients that sharing their stories must be about more than their illness. Story sharing is like a great dining experience - if you say "the bread was good" you miss the nuance of service, atmosphere, and the many elements that make up that unique experience. Treat storytellers like the multidimensional people they are.
