Yes in my personal experience, I had yo face a lot of performance issues related to heavy queries especially involving cross joins on multiple tables because usually our OLTP database is in Normalized Form which increases the size of database as well. So to maintain and ensure good performance: 1. Always create indexes on columns which are regularly used in user searches. 2. Try to manage their re-organization and rebuilding either automatically or manually over the regular interval. i e. On monthly basis if the number of transactions are around hundreds and thousands per day or week 3. Do not create unnecessary index or heavier indexes as it will dramatically reduce the performance instead of improving it.
