There are different types of system models, such as conceptual models, logical models, physical models, and simulation models. Depending on your needs and preferences, you can use different tools to create and manipulate your system models. Some of the most popular tools are SysML, UML, MATLAB, Simulink, and AnyLogic.

2 System Analysis

Once you have a system model, you need to analyze it to evaluate its performance, feasibility, and quality. System analysis is the process of applying various methods and techniques to your system model to test its behavior, verify its requirements, identify its problems, and explore its alternatives. System analysis can involve different aspects, such as functional analysis, reliability analysis, risk analysis, trade-off analysis, and sensitivity analysis. To perform system analysis, you can use tools that support different methods and techniques, such as Excel, R, Python, SPSS, Fault Tree Analysis, Monte Carlo Simulation, and Optimization Algorithms.

When trying to analyse a system, you are probably either: 1) analysing data taken from this system 2) analysing simulations run on models 1) Consider what blindspots you may have, which prevents you from accessing meaningful information. Alternatively, are you giving too much weight to something that is just noise, or something that is not intrinsically comingfrom the specific system you wish to analyse ? 2) If the simulations do not give meaningful results, the models may be limiting. - Review your assumptions (some may be wrong) - Review your approximations (you may be in a use case where they are not valid anymore) - Assess the need to modelise a sub system, to gather specific insights about components of your system.

3 System Optimization

After you have analyzed your system model, you may want to optimize it to improve its efficiency, effectiveness, and robustness. System optimization is the process of finding the best solution for your system among a set of possible solutions that satisfy your constraints and objectives. System optimization can involve different criteria, such as cost, performance, quality, safety, and sustainability. To perform system optimization, you can use tools that support different approaches and methods, such as Linear Programming, Nonlinear Programming, Genetic Algorithms, Multi-Objective Optimization, and Decision Analysis.

The final step in systems engineering is to document your system and its process. System documentation is the collection of artifacts that describe your system and its development. It helps you document your system's specifications, design, implementation, testing, validation, verification, maintenance, and evolution. It also helps you document your system's rationale, assumptions, decisions, and lessons learned. System documentation can include different types of artifacts, such as requirements documents, design documents, test plans, user manuals, reports, and diagrams. To create and manage your system documentation, you can use tools that support different formats and standards, such as Word, PowerPoint, LaTeX, Markdown, HTML, PDF, and IEEE.

One other way of thinking about system documentation is that it’s not always the final step. Documentation of the system and of the steps/decisions are sometimes the first things that need to be reviewed to begin understanding the complex system. Documentation is the final step of a design process, but the first step for anyone that goes behind the designer. That’s what makes it so important.
