1 Update your portfolio

One of the first steps you can take to advance your career is to update your portfolio of projects and achievements. Your portfolio showcases your work experience, skills, and accomplishments as a structural engineer. It can help you attract new clients, land new projects, or apply for promotions or awards. To update your portfolio, you should include your most recent and relevant projects, highlight your role and responsibilities, and provide evidence of your impact and outcomes. You should also use clear and concise language, visuals, and data to demonstrate your engineering solutions and results.

Updating your portfolio (essentially working on different projects) is not always an easy task. At least not when you work for a smaller firm without a big range of projects. On the contrary when you work for a larger firm with many and diverse projects running simultaneously it's much easier to jump from project to project or from task to task to gain experiences and showcase diversity in your work. That is usually achieved by having a discussion with your line manager on what types of projects you would like to work on and why. In case they are in agreement with your goals/needs then it's usually no issue for you to participate in the projects you want to.

2 Learn new software

Another step you can take to advance your career is to learn new software tools and applications that can help you improve your efficiency, accuracy, and creativity as a structural engineer. Software tools can help you perform various tasks, such as modeling, analysis, design, testing, and documentation of structures. Learning new software can help you expand your capabilities, keep up with the latest trends and innovations, and enhance your productivity and quality. Some of the software tools you can learn or update are AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, ETABS, and MATLAB.

Although learning new software is not a bad idea in principle, in reality its successful implementation might be a bit more tricky. To be more specific, different firms in the industry tend to use different software for the same issues. As an example where one firm might prefer ETABS, another might be more into TEKLA SD. Now if the firm I work for uses TEKLA SD and noone else in my team is familiar with ETABS, there would be no added benefit for me (or the firm) learning a second software noone else uses. On the other side if you want to learn a software that can create immediate value to you and your work (if others work with it and you know you will use it in the future) the that would be a very good investment in terms of your time.

A professional association is a group of people who share a common interest, goal, or profession. Joining a professional association can help you network with other structural engineers, access educational and career resources, participate in events and conferences, and stay updated on the latest news and developments in your field.
