Joining a professional Society related to Civil/Structural engineering is a great way to stay updated. The societies are ICE, IStructE,...They require their members to submit CPD Records in regular intervals. CPD means Continuous Professional Development. An engineer have to update their knowledge on a continuous basis. One’s education doesn't end after graduation, as there's development day to day.

D’après mon expérience, pour être en constance et parfaite synergie avec les derniers développements de son domaine, un ingénieur en structure se doit au moins d’adhérer à une association d’ingénieur et de se documenter constamment avec les règles et règlementations, les normes en vigueur ainsi que leur mise à jour. Sans oublier aussi d’accroitre ses connaissances sur les logiciels de structure qui devenus incontournable dans un monde en pleine croissance et technologique.

One thing I have useful is that there are several blogs and podcasts related to structursl engineering which can help the students and researchers to get started with a topic. Sometimes the blogs and podcasts give reference to a published article which is very useful. Generally we should not cite any blog or podcast for publication but we can get a fair idea about the topic

De nos jours, un semestre ne passe sans qu’il n’y ait des séminaires de formation sur les dernières innovations et les nouveaux défis dans le domaine de l’ingénierie de structure. C’est pourquoi pour être au courant des derniers développements de l’ingénierie de structure, l’ingénieur de structure se doit de participer à ces genres de séminaires. Cela lui permettra non seulement de se plonger en plein dans la réalité de l’évolution de son domaine mais de bénéficier aussi de partage d’expériences, chose qui vaut plus que de l’or de nos jours. This is the best way to get knowledge about a particular topic is enrolling in courses, online or offline; provided they are peer reviewed. The major problem in this is for students who are poor and can't afford such courses. So, the best way to impart knowledge and cover most of the interested people to join the course is by dividing it into free and paid; and give options of free to industry people also. Another important point about courses is giving exams as it helps us to check our performance and revise too.

Enrolling in courses and programs that have a research component, but not necessarily a thesis, extends your breadth of "top-down" knowledge of emerging trends. As Engineers, we often have a solid grasp of the "nuts and bolts" of topics, and this enables us to conduct clean sheet design-build using fundamental laws, advanced technical principles, and approximation techniques. The emerging breakthroughs aren't as well known. For example, in a graduate Mechanical Vibrations class, I learned about utilizing piezoelectric ceramic materials to fine tune the damping characteristics of skyscrapers, and spaghetti pasta was used as the damper in the model. I would've never been exposed to the concept of piezoelectric ceramic damping without this.

Jumped into the field during the era of manual calculations and manual drafting. Then came the software’s , versions . From StaadPro 2000 to StaadPro 2023 From Etabs 9 to Etabs 21. Modular brick construction to pod era. Memberships to different Institutions , Attending and presenting seminars, webinars, mentoring and what not. Importantly asking for the toughest project and working on that. Struggle for the existence and survival of the fittest are the key factors which thrive one for continuous upgradation. Profession demands continuous upgradation and never forget to share your stories. You never know who is getting inspired in the background.

Working in a company where you can develop through on-the-job training, mentoring and training and in projects that allow you to develop and deepen knowledge in Structural Engineering. An important part of development is through day-to-day execution. Look for companies that allow you to develop practical and theoretical knowledge.

Upgrading ourselves to current trends is a mandate, not only to sharpen our skills, but also to enable us to provide more sustainable and economical solutions, rather than relying on conservative approaches in design. To stay current as Engineers, we should read regional structural magazines (such as ACI, AISC, ICE, or IStructE) which offer a broader perspective on current trends, upcoming learning sessions, and expert opinions in comprehensive way. Additionally, we need to be actively engage in structural forums, where I have learned a lot from practicing engineers.

To stay current in the structural engineering field, I regularly attend seminars, workshops, and conferences, read industry journals and publications, participate in webinars, and engage with professional networks and organizations.

For the consultancy field, it is of the utmost importance to follow the market demands. The rise of artificial intelligence and the way it has proven itself to be of great assistance with the programing of tools that could greatly cut down the time, effort, and resources required to complete a project shall be the current investment of any entity within this field. Previously many consultancy firms did not take the rise of BIM models and its automation tools seriously and as a result, the efficiency of the resources has been lower compared to other competitors, which means higher prices and accordingly a fewer chance to compete with them in the market without either lowering the fees, or change strategies (which will cost time & money).
