You're striving for thought leadership. How can you ensure diverse voices are authentically represented?

One of my goals in life was to travel to other countries on international business to see how I would be perceived. Throughout my career I start with being credible to build trust. I then give respect to get respect back. When I was the Director of Marketing Communications at the World Affairs Council of Northern CA I worked with world leaders as featured speakers. I learned the value of listening to people with different experiences and sharing those perspectives for discussion. i.e., we are all human beings and have more in common vs stereotypes. I recommend working with HR to develop inclusion, diversity, equity and leadership metrics that can measure current state and progress toward goals.

Here are my thoughts: 1. Understand your specific area of thought leadership and how it relates to the experiences of people with diverse backgrounds. 2. Give space for conversations with groups you usually don't spend time with. Be willing to let others lead the conversation. 3. Do a personal bias assessment. Make sure your thought leadership communication isn't filled with statements that could make a group feel isolated from participating. 4. Research the belief systems, culture and disadvantages of marginalized groups in order to be an ally through your thought leadership.

Authentic representation demands more than tokenism. It necessitates a deep-rooted commitment to equity and inclusion. Identify and amplify voices from marginalized communities. Provide platforms for underrepresented perspectives. Challenge biases and stereotypes. Foster a culture of psychological safety where everyone feels heard and valued. Diversity without inclusion is just a checklist.

Active listening is fundamental to user advocacy. It leads to better, more informed decision-making, aligns team efforts with strategic goals, and is crucial for effective collaboration and understanding user needs. It also helps identify and mitigate unconscious biases.

Use your influence to highlight the work and ideas of people from underrepresented groups. This doesn't mean speaking for them but rather giving them the space to share their own stories and insights. By doing so, you not only lend your credibility to these voices, but also demonstrate that leadership is about elevating others, not just oneself. Share examples of how you've used your platform to uplift diverse perspectives and inspired your audience to broaden their horizons. Encourage discussions on the importance of promoting inclusivity within thought leadership and how amplifying diverse voices can foster creativity, innovation, and a more equitable society.

To genuinely represent diverse voices in your thought leadership, start by integrating inclusive practices into your strategy. In my coaching experience, I guided a client looking to enhance their thought leadership by making their platform more inclusive. We focused on actively reaching out to thought leaders from various backgrounds and involving them in discussions and content creation. As a leader it’s our remit to ensure diversity of thought, culture, and all aspects of representation are achieved. We succeed by listening to diverse perspectives and having synergistic and wholistic views to provide solutions and to feed decision making. If we see lack of participation, not only engage to correct, but find out why. You may learn of underlying issues in your organization or team that require urgent attention.
