You’re starting a vocal coaching internship. What do you need to learn to make the most of it?

1 Know your goals

Before you start your internship, you should have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and learn from it. Do you want to focus on a specific genre, technique, or clientele? Do you want to develop your teaching, communication, or business skills? Do you want to network with other professionals or potential clients? Having specific and realistic goals will help you plan your activities, track your progress, and communicate your expectations to your mentor.

2 Respect your mentor

Your mentor is not only your supervisor, but also your teacher, guide, and role model. You should respect their time, expertise, and feedback, and follow their instructions and advice. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, but also listen carefully and take notes. Don’t argue, complain, or criticize your mentor, but also don’t be afraid to express your opinions, concerns, or ideas. Be open-minded, flexible, and willing to learn from your mentor’s experience and style.

3 Be professional

As a vocal coaching intern, you’re representing yourself, your mentor, and your profession. You should always be professional in your appearance, behavior, and communication. Dress appropriately, show up on time, be prepared, and follow the rules and policies of your mentor and their workplace. Be polite, courteous, and respectful to your mentor, their clients, and their colleagues. Communicate clearly, concisely, and confidently, and use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation in your emails and reports.
