You're starting a photoshoot with a new model. How can you ensure their posing and expressions are on point?

In my experience spending some time in getting to know the talent and break the ice is half the battle. Talk to them and treat them like an old acquaintance. Make them laugh and totally put them at ease. From here engage and issue precise instructions as to your lighting brief. Communication is key. All though you will not have this problem with a high end professional model. Time is money and in my observations the pros can just switch it on!

We'd sit down and discuss the goal of the shoot before I start photographing them. I'd show them examples, explain my directing style, ask them what they need from me as the director to have a good experience (they know themselves and can communicate challenges) and then I express gratitude for their participation. During the shoot, safety is my top priority so I always check to make sure they feel secure in the poses and actions they are taking to create movement. If I notice signs of frustration or confusion, we'll take a break and I ask them how they are feeling. Then I change up my communication to put them at ease and address the concerns they just shared with me. Empathy will take you a long way.

Every photoshoot has to start with an idea and develop in a creative brief that sets all the shoot parameters, including references to poses and desired results. Communication is key. So, a creative brief ensures that every creative involved in the shooting is on the same page.

Clarity is key at any and every point in time. Yes, it's usually good when you have experienced models who know what to do, thus, minimizing how much work you put in. However, sometimes you may have to work with models who are probably having a hard time believing that they can do well. Firstly, understand the goal of the project yourself. Draw a mood board. It's easier to carry every other party along from here. This becomes a reference through out the entire process. Secondly, learn what habits, atmospheres, or musics that best help them to be themselves so that you can get them to bring their full energy. Lastly, use words like, "okay let's do it again but do this instead" rather than, "no, that's bad." Give the right energy yourself.

Not only do you need to be clear with the model, but you need to make sure that communication is clear with your team and your clients. It can be difficult for a model if they are getting different direction from 3+ different people at the same time (photographer, client(s), stylist(s) for example). Make sure that it clear within your team who will be giving direction, and if you are sharing the duties discuss beforehand so that you speak the same language.

When it comes to posses, I'd rather say I direct. I like things to flow naturally than building right poses that lacks heartbeats. Tell or show them what to do, then let them do it. Try not to be too instructive as well, as this can send the message that they're not getting it. When you direct, you are most likely to end up with authentic poses and pictures that are more original and relatable. Encourage different styles and also, if possible vary your lighting and shooting angles to come up with myriad of interpretations.

Many photographers prepare moodboards and pose inspiration before a shoot. The photographer Lindsay Adler recommends having poses that you can already lead a model through, in addition to propositions that they may have and then going into the prepared inspiration once you've started moving.

Most people I shoot are not models and are not used to taking direction. Catching a natural smile or an unguarded moment cam be incredibly difficult. - Create a warm atmosphere where they can relax a little (they won’t!) - Have a colleague chat to them in position while you ‘test’ the settings (these will be great shots) - When looking to camera, ask if they know any jokes - they won’t but the question itself will cause them to drop their guard and they always smile. This trick only works once so be ready and be quick!

Oder Allgemein: Kannst du dich an das lustigste Erlebnis deines Lebens erinnen? So in der Art. Das erzeugt den Ausdruck automatisch, weil das Modell sich in diese Stimmung begibt.

Face is composed of 70 muscles. Teach model to be aware of them. Show and make them repeat. Discuss emotions and then apply face expression to emotion.

I prioritize building a friendly and comfortable rapport when working with new models. I use positive reinforcement to keep them focused on their poses, and I offer constructive criticism in a light-hearted manner to avoid discouraging them. Being perceptive of your models during a shoot is not only beneficial for them but you as well. Especially during on-location shoots where weather plays a huge factor, be mindful of the model's hydration and energy. The last thing you want is a sweaty face or baggy eyes to be what makes your final photo unusable!

Los descansos son útiles pero aun así hay que intentar hacer sesiones medianas. Las que duran más de 3 horas en mi experiencia todo lo que pasa de las 3 horas es material absurdo porque el modelo se nota que ya no está con ganas de nada y se hace muy pesado

I often cook during photoshoot so during the break models are presented with my meals. I work hard but slow. I prefer quality to quantity. And good meal is a good moment to summarize what has been done so far.

My background as a Ford Model allows a totally unique point of view for assisting new models or clients that are afraid of the camera. When the model arrives on set- I offer a beverage (if old enough a Mimosa) then I ask what music they prefer. This all happens when their getting hair and makeup done. All this combined with- when we're on set I ask the model to stand where I am going to be with the camera. I then go to where they'll be. I walk and talk them through a series of ideas for posing. I'm guiding them with a ton of options that work- and what does not work. By this time, we're all laughing! Then I go back to where my camera is and we start to create magic. All with guiding them through a series of posing that I just demonstrated.

Experience is the best teacher, once you get your reps in with various types of shoots and location you'll discover your own groove. One of the things I enjoy about photoshoots is how much I learn during the editing phase! It's once you're staring at every nuance of your photo that you realize the minor tweaks you could've made in the moment.
