Let’s be honest: the person who is an expert in their field and agrees to work with you as your mentor doesn’t have a lot of free time to allocate for you. Therefore, you should be realistic and manage your expectations. You should ask them more fundamental questions, and minor problems should be solved by yourself. In my opinion, it is beneficial for you to spend time actively engaging in the field you are about to learn. This will not only help you find answers to your questions but also allow you to learn other things related to your topic of inquiry.
