Understanding the goals is a key strategy to make a positive impression in a new job. Begin by researching and familiarizing yourself with the organization's overall objectives and your department's specific goals. During initial meetings, express your enthusiasm for contributing to these objectives and inquire about any priority projects. As you work on tasks, ensure that your efforts directly contribute to achieving these goals, and consider suggesting innovative solutions or improvements aligned with the organizational objectives. This strategic alignment not only helps you stand out but also positions you as an integral part of the team actively driving the company's success.

The "new age" employee is focused on "adding value" for "better end user experience". Focus & energy needs to be channelized on collaboration, co-creation, active deliberation, debate. design & execution. Impression management takes a lot of energy. The choice lies with the employee - which route they want to take. If I have to get into impression management to get my boss to notice me, then I have clearly made a wrong decision and am in the wrong company. I will update my resume and start looking out... :-)

Taking care of delivering task assignments early or on time. Within those tasks look for ways to improve efficiency and/or collect metrics if applicable. In your 1:1’s with management share any findings in enhancing how you can do your job with higher performance. This is a stand out quality - doing YOUR job better, not in changing anyone else’s.

Asking your boss what their goals, preferences, and pet peeves are are just as important as clearly representing your own goals and strengths. Prioritizing relationship together with performance in the early days of a new relationship will pay dividends for the lifetime of the relationship.

Provide your boss updates on your progress, share insights, and listen to feedback wisely to ensure alignment with expectations. More than that: ask intelligent questions! Demonstrate curiosity and a desire to learn by asking thoughtful questions. Seek clarification when needed and show genuine interest in understanding the business and your role within it.

It's a rubbish thing in third-world countries. Seeking feedback and improvement from others is treated as a weakness. So, try to hear your voice from your working environment. Please don't seek.

A talent is knowing when to lead and when to follow. When you are starting out, and working hard in the organization, there are pieces to consider besides the technical skills of your role. For example, the culture of the department and organization are important. Understanding both of these will help you. You do this by asking feedback and how you can become an asset to the team, leading to dependability and trust. If you are not coachable, your time will be short in the company, no matter how skilled you are in the area.

Don't be shy about sharing your accomplishments. When you achieve a milestone or complete a successful project, inform your boss and discuss the impact of your work. When talking about achievements, show enthusiasm for your work and the organization's mission. Let your passion shine through in your attitude and approach to your responsibilities.

Proactively set achievable goals aligned with the company's objectives, and consistently exceed expectations by delivering high-quality results on time. Document your accomplishments and contributions, quantifying them whenever possible to provide tangible evidence of your impact on the team and the organization. Regularly communicate your progress and achievements to your boss, demonstrating your value through concrete examples and fostering a positive impression of your work ethic and effectiveness.

There is something called 'organisational culture ' and so as a new employee you have to give yourself time to know and adjust where necessary. Once you get to know the work culture at play,then you can align your own work culture and make adjustments where necessary. Some of the cultural practices may be in line with yours and others may be parallel and so there is need to align and realign where necessary. Then you can see where you fit and your strength is needed most so you get the opportunity to showcase what you can do. Look out for opportunities beyond your technical role and volunteering opportunities as well. It's equally a good way to catch your boss' attention as sometimes the soft skills equally counts.

Here's what I've found to be helpful to make a great impression as a biomedical/ orthopaedic engineer at a new company: 1. Seek opportunities to demonstrate strong problem-solving skills to collaborate & learn from colleagues. 2. As soon as "finding your feet" in a new role, show initiative by volunteering for challenging projects. 3. Consistently deliver high-quality work on time. 4. Communicate effectively and professionally. 5. Share innovative ideas to improve processes or products. 6. Take ownership of tasks and responsibilities. 7. Stay updated on industry trends and advancements. 8. Build positive relationships with coworkers. 9. Show enthusiasm for the company's mission & goals.

I’m going to discuss this from the perspective of a recently hired PhD. Recognize that for your first several years you are overpaid. Avoid at every opportunity any arrogance. Your company is where it is without your help and every one of your colleagues PhD or not, has contributed much more to your companies success than you. Select a position where you can be excited to perform and willing to work long hours. Search out hard problems to solve. Be successful at solving them. If you have management that likes to come around and ask you about your latest accomplishment. Have something in your desk drawer to pull out and discuss. Play the suck up game but with a sense of humor, observe +/- about your boss and senior execs, & learn.

Two additional pieces I would like to share that are not in the list is to show up and be present with your team and coworkers of the organization, and also work hard. You are in control of how you show up every day and how your team and supervisor see you. If you constantly have a poor attitude, it will become increasingly difficult for individuals to want to work with you or your supervisor to want to trust you with new assignments and projects that could help you advance in the organization. Working hard is self-explanatory. I try to work as if nobody else is waiting for weeks and weeks on me, and I try to work as fast as they do. Trust and dependency go far in an organization, increasing engagement and teamwork.

To make a great impression: 1. Demonstrate Enthusiasm: Show genuine enthusiasm for the role and company. Express your eagerness to contribute and be an integral part of the team. 2. Proactive Communication: Keep your boss informed about your progress, ask questions when needed. 3. Quality of Work: Pay attention to detail, meet deadlines consistently, and ensure your contributions align with the company's goals. 4. Seek Additional Responsibilities: Volunteer for tasks or projects beyond your initial responsibilities. 5. Professionalism: Be punctual, dress appropriately, and adhere to company policies and exhibit a strong work ethic. 6. Show Appreciation: Express gratitude for guidance and support from colleagues and others.
