You're starting a new career. How can you make sure you find the right mentor?

Securing the guidance of a suitable mentor when embarking on a new career journey is crucial to steer clear of potential detours. Conducting thorough research and reflecting on our goals expands our outlook on our mission and aids in identifying a mentor who shares our wavelength and alignment. Connecting with mentors in our field facilitates networking and exposes us to diverse viewpoints. Establishing trust between the mentor and mentee is vital to prevent unnecessary questioning and doubt regarding the mentor's advice. Being open and authentic in front of the mentor, and acknowledging our shortcomings, enables us to overcome them and ultimately succeed.

Sometimes we won't know what our goals are as it is a new space. Reach out to some experts on social media and ask for a coffee chat, you may get a "yes". I've done a handful of coffee chats to those who were interested in pursuing a career in social media or marketing. I've also asked for coffee chats externally but mostly internally to understand my next role. Once you have your goals defined, you can identify who might be a great mentor to help you on the journey.

Whoosh— call me a dreamer on this one; but I feel the universe aligns us with those who are meant to be in our lives— however, we need to pay attention to who they are; and the role they serve. Sometimes the more we seek the less we find—

Look for individuals within your organization, industry, or professional network who have the skills, experience, and qualities you admire. Consider seeking mentors both within and outside your immediate work environment. Attend industry events, workshops, and conferences to expand your network. Engage in conversations with professionals who share your interests, and be open to building connections with experienced individuals who could potentially become mentors.

Don't just jump into the first thing you see. Be like Sherlock Holmes and do some detective work. Watch how this mentor sells their offers in their IG/ TikTok stories, creates daily content, and see if you two share similar VALUES. At the end of the day, you should invest in a mentor not to do the work for you *yawn!*... But to be someone whose insight will compliment your goals AND challenge you to grow your online business in the best possible way.

Be honest here. Inauthentic compliments, though kind, can also be offensive. Many people will notice. Remember that the mentor and mentee relationship is not a one way street. You should encourage and support your mentor as much as they support and advocate for you. The best mentor to have does not just support you and lend advice, but they believe in you. Therefore they will advocate for you.

Mentors are not products that you find on the supermarket shelf from which you can pick and choose so I think it's a false premise talking about the 'right' or 'wrong' mentor. You have to see who's in your network or extended circle of acquaintances. You need to ask around and listen to what other people say, put out your feelers and see what potential mentors may have to offer. However, in the end, given the right mindset, you can learn from absolutely everyone who you encounter.
