You're starting a new business. How do you find the right co-founder to help you succeed?

In finding my co-founder, I made a to-do list: what skills I lack, what the business needs, and where I see it going. This helped me narrow down the co-founder hunt. Don't look for the same person in terms of skills like you. Spot which are your weakest point and look for a person who will fill the gaps. The only thing you should look to be a common are the values you are sharing. If you have mismatch there it will be hard to make something big.

I have been running a successful business from a decade now below are my thoughts about choosing the Co-founder. Clarify Vision: Define your business idea and values. Identify Needs: Assess your strengths and weaknesses. Network: Reach out to contacts and join startup communities. Transparency: Be clear about your goals and expectations. Compatibility: Assess personal and professional compatibility. Trial Period: Consider working on a smaller project together first. Roles and Responsibilities: Discuss and document each person's role. Legal Advice: Seek legal guidance for agreements. Trust Your Instincts: Choose someone you trust and respect.

Just look for someone whose skills, experience, and values complement yours, filling in any gaps in expertise or perspective. Consider the long-term vision for your business and seek a co-founder who shares your passion and commitment to its success. Additionally, ensure alignment in terms of work ethic, communication style, and willingness to collaborate. Building a strong foundation based on mutual understanding and compatibility sets the stage for a successful partnership and maximizes your chances of achieving your entrepreneurial goals.

In my opinion the best thing will be to engage with people who you know from a longer period of time so you know what is hidden under the hood, how they act under pressure and what are their drivers. I don't believe in meeting a new person and making a company together. It is like marrying somebody after the first kiss. It could work but the chances for that are really low

Networking is your golden ticket. Attend industry events, both in person and virtually. Look for conferences, workshops, and meetups where like-minded professionals gather. In my case, I stumbled upon my co-founder at a hackathon. We were fierce competitors during the event, pushing the boundaries of innovation. After the event, I took a bold step. Instead of viewing my competitor as just that, I saw an opportunity for collaboration.e went from rivals to partners, leveraging our expertise to create something extraordinary. Platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter also have potential to find co-founder connections. PS: Networking isn't just about exchanging business cards; it's about forging connections through shared experiences.

Think Jedi searching for their Padawan, not a used car salesman hawking ideas to anyone with ears. Network like a ninja! Attend industry events, join online communities, and chat up your contacts. Engage with smaller, well-defined, measurable tasks first, before discussing co-founding relationship. You can do things like, add 2000 users into the community; find a corporate sponsor that brings in $x; engage with 50 potential users and conduct user interviews to get a feel of whether you like the opportunity or not.

In my opinion, maintaining a successful fit with a new co-founder requires constant communication and alignment of goals. Regular check-ins, addressing concerns, and celebrating achievements together foster trust and ensure shared commitment to the company's vision.

Start working together so you could check if the partner is actually a good fit! Person can have multiple achievements and testimonials but it doesn’t mean that it’s a good first. Observe how the person deal with people, how she or he treats employees.

Achado o cofundador, seja honesto, transparente, revele seus desejos e inten??es com negócio, ou?a o que seu possível cofundador fala sobre o negócio, quais as expectativas dele, se ele entende o que está sendo iniciado. Uma sociedade deve ser igual uma orquestra, bem afinada. Onde todos têm bem definido suas fun??es, participa??o nos lucros ou nos prejuízos.

Aqui se colhe os frutos do bom networking (etapa 2, que já comentei), que se baseia na comunica??o aberta, na confian?a mútua e na reciprocidade. O grau de formaliza??o é proporcional ao patrim?nio atual e às previs?es para a start-up. Deve-se definir o papel de cada um, quem será o CEO (inclusive recrutando no mercado). Em outras palavras, definir a Governan?a Corporativa da empresa. Se fala muito em GC, mas infelizmente há um receio em usar a palavra que melhor define a Governan?a: poder! Qual o raio de a??o, os limites, freios e contrapesos entre controladores e executivos?

You definitely need one person who will be the "CEO" and will take the end decision. You can always discuss together but the decision should be taken by one person. Typically you need one person for product, one or tech and one for business. It could be the same person but these are the main decision areas. All the founders should have almost equal equity so they are incentivised to make that company successful. Otherwise even if you are able to make a good negotiation and Lowe equity of other cofounder, in long term there is a big chance that founder to leave the team.

I believe the best cofounder comes in 3 simple ways. 1. They know what they want out of this relationship. 2. They have their integrity and understanding of business. 3. They understand arguements are a part of business.

Negotiating equity and work divisions involves open communication and understanding each party's contributions. Clearly define roles, responsibilities, and expected outcomes.

Spend time together as human beings. Forget about business plans, revenue, and the daily stress of trying to make a business work. Focus on connecting as people and building a genuine relationship. You will end up spending most of your waking hours with this person - make sure you understand each other and like each other as people!

To build you need to evaluate each other on the core values. Every founder needs to define the non-negotiable core values that are the foundation of the business. See how the potential co-founder fare on these values. If they are congruous then you move to the next level of building trust. If there is a mismatch of the values, then do not take him as the co-founder

Mutual confidence must be at the very begining. if it is not so, you'd better not launch the rocket. My belief is that confidence should not be built during the process, it must be well stablished when you start. Facts are to be which toughen up that confidence. Every single day is a challenge for co-founders to trust in their mates.

Establishing the right co-founder relationship is very essential to stay on the path for long. My experience of founding two startups, and talking to a lot of founders I've seen that founders often are able to do well in professional relationships (skills and ideas) but they lack on the personal side (values) of it. At the end of the day you're spending the majority of the time with a person so you need to align on the emotional front as well. The best practices I've seen/adopted are - - Spending good time with each other before the beginning of the venture to understand each other better as a human, becoming like best friends! - Aligning values, both personal and professional. On a whiteboard or mindmap, refering it all time :)

When starting our company, my partner and I sought alignment in vision. We turned to an Ikigai exercise, a Japanese concept meaning 'a reason for being', blending what you love, what you're skilled at, what the world needs, and what can be monetized. We focused on : - Passion and Skill: Uncovering shared passions and individual strengths. - Market Needs: Aligning our abilities with market demands. - Shared Values and Goals: Harmonizing our personal and professional aspirations. This wasn't just about business fit; it was a journey to discover our collective purpose, the clarity from this exercise laid a robust foundation for our business, built on shared values and complementary skills.

First off, it is not easy to find the right co-founder. It is more than finding someone with complementary skills and who aligns with your values. The fact of the matter is that business success depends on execution of a great idea. As such, I look for the ability to execute in a potential co-founder. If the candidate is purely strategic (full of ideas), it may not be the best fit since ideas don't go anywhere if we cannot implement them. The ability to execute is also what investors often focus on beyond the business concept. In short, find someone who can take action together because it speaks louder than words.

Statistically speaking 23% of startups fail due to team-related issues. This means it's worth exploring if you have the same values and vision as your co-founder or early team member. Although not always an option, the best way is to have previous experience working together.
