You're about to start a graphic design project. What tools should you use to ensure success?

Listening and having a collaboration with your client will take you far. When I started on my solo career over 25 years ago, I had two rules. One that the client was very happy and two that the check didn't bounce. There is a difference between what looks best, and incorrect. It is often hard to put aside what you feel is best. I usually do it the client way and then my way. I always explain why I changed what I changed, and most times they will go for my way. But it is a collaboration. If you take the job, then you have to be open to ideas that are not yours. It is after all, their nickel. And the best path to the next new job or client, is a happy customer!

Understand your client's requirements: Ideate, plan your project, and in between, keep checking the timeline and also checking whether you are on the right track.

Start by listening to the needs of your client. Develop a creative brief with clear goals. Do some rough sketches or thumbnails to flush out the ideas. Then move into using the appropriate design software tailored to the need.

Always start by understanding the client's goals and objectives. Then, understand their brand platform, which should hold all the parameters necessary to be consistent and do what's best for the brand. Next, have the client share inspiration, research the industry and competitors, and discuss their and your examples. Lastly, write a creative brief outlining everything above before you push a single pixel. Now, you get to develop concepts in your notebook and refine the best ideas in the relevant design software for the project. Notice how software tools are far down the process; it is never about tools and tactics but powerful concepts.

In my experience as a graphic designer, the 3 main softwares to complete a design project would be Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign - this covers print and digital outputs. The Adobe CC suite has the key software required to complete projects for video editing, animations, web design and print.

SO many people commenting software but I am not sure I've seen one mention a pencil and paper. The computer is a good tool, but it's not often the one that guides the whole process. The natural world is so abundant with inspiration and tools.

There are many types of graphic design software available, each with different tools and functions. Depending on the software, users can create illustrations, develop multimedia, stylize or edit images, and format layouts.

Explore! This is the best way to learn in my opinion. YouTube is great for tutorials and learning how other designers do things. There is always more than one way to create and the more you know the better you can apply what you have learned to a project. Collaboration! Talk to your network, someone might know something you don't. Ask the questions, get the feedback, eat the piece of humble pie and learn. Can't never could until they tried.

It always pays off to learn the fundamentals. If you have a good understanding of that, the software you use is secondary. Many times, starting a new project requires learning new tools, and if your fundamentals are solid, most often than not, whatever resources/tutorials/courses you need, you’ll find on the internet. Explore, stay curious and have fun!

Canva is a great way to learn the basics of design, and their program, for that matter. Search for "Canva Design School" and you'll find different bite-sized courses. It's free! For color theory, start with Adobe Color. You can play with color palettes and observe different elements of color theory as you go along.

In my experience, the best tool is a pencil and pad of paper. That's where I start to work with the space and composition. Get some good ideas there, then move on to the computer.

It's also important to learn how to provide return on investment for your clients. Learn how to ask them questions to provide for a more successful outcome for their project. Once you've covered this.. use your tools and design elements and principles to help them move the needle for their business.

This is very important! One needs to "keep up with the fashion" that's current and find new ways to work on things which are just enough different to stand out. I've made a logo or layout and have iterated almost always a few times till what "feels" like the right fit happens!

I'm all for backing up one's work! Get cloud storage if you don't already. That's a great way to start. An external hard drive is another way to go for backing up files. Keep your base files ALWAYS if you work in layers, such as in Photoshop. That way if you make a mistake or need to adjust something, it's easy to do by selecting the layer you need to work on. Canva is also forgiving by allowing you to edit images directly in their app.

Experimenting is very crucial in graphic designing! Personally I experiment several times till I am satisfied before I send samples for my clients to choose from. Sometimes the client may not like the samples you've sent them so I try my best to do different designs through experimentations. I try different design styles, typography colour combinations and grading, etc till I get the results I am looking for.

Take the time to uncover the best solution for your client that their budget allows for. Don't go straight to the software. Go to the places that the client serves. Watch how people interact with products, services, technology and people to inspire ideas. Listen, observe, smell, read and reason about things. Use everything that you've learned to create many iterations of a design to flesh out the bad ideas and get to the real gems!

? As a creative graphic designer, get the ideas what your outcome design should look like. ? Know and get the graphic design software/tool you are going to use for the design. such as Adobe Photoshop, Coreldraw, Canva ? Tracking of time to manage the working hour.

Don't forget about more traditional artistic tools/expressions to give your design a more handmade and expressive feel if that's what the project calls for. Paint, draw, sculpt and collage.. there are so many different and interesting artistic tools to give your project a unique spin.

As to to keep learning, I observe advertisements. What font are they using? Serif? San Serif? How are they wording their ad? What colors are they using. My favorite one to do this is with the Aldi "What coming next week" flyer you grab as you leave the store. Otherwise, subscribe to newsletters that keep you up on design trends. Creative Boom is a good one that I subscribe to. I read books on graphic design to expand my own knowledge.

I use industry-standard software like Adobe Creative Cloud tools (Illustrator and photoshop). Familiarity with design principles and trends is crucial. Don't forget to communicate closely with clients to understand their vision and goals.

Be open to making adjustments and adapting as circumstances change. Remember, goal setting is a dynamic process, and it's okay to refine or update your goals as you progress and gain new insights.
