There are 3 things I do to stay current in my role. I ensure I subscribe to updates from relevant sources to maintain a pulse of policy changes. I talk about what I read and learn with colleagues to tap into their understanding and to check any misperceptions I might have. Most importantly I ensure I understand how the policy impacts those I work with.

As a social worker confronting policy changes, staying ahead of the curve demands vigilance, adaptability, and strategic engagement. Here's how social workers can ensure they're learning from trustworthy sources: Official Documents and Guidelines: Refer to official documents, guidelines, and manuals provided by relevant government agencies, professional associations, or employers. These materials often contain accurate and up-to-date information about policy changes and their implications for practice. Newsletters and Updates: Subscribe to newsletters or updates from reputable sources related to social work, public administration, and relevant policy areas.

Communication is key! It should be at the very top of this list! You cannot impliment a policy change without communication! It needs to be written, it needs to be voiced and trickled down the ladder of employees. It needs to be sent in writing and voiced to current clients as well. At the end of the day, noone will know about a policy change if it is not being made aware of. Managers need to make it top priority! Have written printouts stuck on walls etc. Make it obvious! Implimenting new policy is tough. Staff are going to need to adjust. And time to adjust. Just because you have told them once does not mean that is enough. Keep repeating the message, eventually it will be embedded within all employees practice.

In our highly charged society, change is inevitable. We can reduce of stress and anxiety regarding change by learning the details of the intended change. Also, understanding the impetus for the policy change may be of great importance. Policy is Politics and Politics is Policy. The nuts and bolts of policy change and its intricacies can be daunting. Do not become overwhelmed. Study to be well informed. Act when the change is unhealthy for the population you serve. Advocate for change to remedy injustices. Educate others with calm yet firm determination to this challenge, we shall overcome. It is what social workers do!

Two ways to look at policy changes are how might they benefit those you work with, and how might those changes benefit you yourself? A new policy can mean new funding for programs and services, increased access to programming, and increased eligibility to benefits for those you are serving. Think out of the box and see if the new changes to policy provide any new opportunities for your clients that weren't there before. Also try to look for opportunities that benefit you when there are big changes. Does a policy change mean the opportunity for you to learn a new skill, make new connections, or move into a new role? Think long term. How might becoming an "expert" on the implications of a new policy position you for future opportunities?

Policy changes can have both positive and negative effects on our work, therefore it is crucial to comprehend their significance for our clients and ourselves. Whenever an improvement is required, we should make a note of it and consult with policymakers.

Policy changes are done based on research, legislation changes and to improve the quality of service delivery. It is to guide and protect. Change management takes time but starts within ourselves as professionals. You need to start by asking the question why. My favourite number 1 question always. The root to the change and understanding thereof contributes to buy in.
