One often overlooked group is those just starting out or that play less frequently. When we look at designing a golf course, the pull is to design challenging & visually striking landscapes. While these look stunning and offer a challenge to avid golfers, they can be overwhelming and a deterrent to those just starting out. Designing the course to a wide array of skill levels will help make the game more accessible, as well as providing the challenge avid golfers desire.

To date, my experience has been in renovating and redesigning greens, as well as adding or renovating tees. I wouldn’t qualify or consider myself a full-fledged golf course designer. However, through my work as a teaching professional, club pro, greenkeeper, and golf course superintendent, I've learned one essential thing: A well-designed course should reward a good shot—whether with a par or a birdie—and make you pay for a bad one. Golf should always be both fun and fair.

The first thing I would suggest is to check the grass lines to see if they like the architect designed them. I would gather the data from each hole and share it, if possible with the original architect, or with a golf architect. I would share the members opinion with the architect as well as management’s concerns.

Design for the surrounding community or the community wished for. Golf courses are communal spaces and should reflect the desires of its core community, focus on meeting their needs, emotional and physical. Goes for both public and private courses.
