My contacts and colleagues are a touch away from the points of my relationship and how we worked together. So, when you begin a shift in your career start with your phone more than a communication device.

When I decided to explore new career paths, I began by taking stock of my existing relationships. I made a list of former colleagues, mentors, and professional contacts, reflecting on how each person could potentially help me. This exercise not only organized my network but also reminded me of the value each connection held.

With my contact list in hand, I set out to reconnect with key individuals. I crafted personalized messages, acknowledging our past interactions and expressing my desire to catch up. I emphasized that I was simply looking to reconnect and learn from their experiences, avoiding any direct requests for help. This approach allowed me to rebuild rapport and set the stage for future conversations.

As I reconnected with my contacts, I looked for opportunities to offer value. I shared relevant industry news, congratulated them on their accomplishments, and expressed genuine interest in their work. By focusing on giving rather than taking, I demonstrated my commitment to the relationship and built goodwill that would serve me well in the future.

This is the key right here. Do this upfront before ANYTHING, to show how much you appreciate the person/client, and give them an expectation of what they are in for. PS - make sure the value is super relevant to them, and not found easily, making it even more of value ?

This knowledge not only expanded my understanding of potential paths but also helped me identify areas for personal growth.

After you’ve reconnected and offered some value, it’s time to ask for insights. You can ask about industry trends, what skills are in demand, or which companies are growing. Most people like sharing their expertise and might give you advice that can really help with your career change. Be clear about what you're seeking, whether it’s feedback on your resume or an introduction to someone they know. Being specific makes it easier for them to help you in a meaningful way.

Never burn your bridges! That way you will always have potential referrals available when seeking to make a career move. If you are going to ask a connection to refer your name for a role, ensure you have critically checked your suitability in terms of skills and experience. Otherwise you risk causing embarrassment to this person who may have to turn you down.

As I gained clarity on my desired career direction, I asked select contacts for referrals. I shared my aspirations and inquired about any openings or connections they might have. By being specific about my goals, I increased the likelihood of receiving relevant introductions. This approach led to several promising leads, demonstrating the power of leveraging relationships for new opportunities.
