Agree that member and/or guest feedback is critical. Surveys are a great option. Would also suggest benchmarking against your competitors to see what they have done. Identify the clear purposes of the redesign. Are you doing it to speed up play? improve bunker drainage? Improve irrigation? Improve playability? Improve turf conditions? Lower maintenance costs? etc. Make sure you give clear direction to your architect/designer as to what you are hoping to achieve with the redesign. Also make sure they know your budget and timeline for completion.

Basically, before embarquing in any modifications performed on the golf course, these need to be planned out accordingly, they need to have a reason (either requested by the golfers/members or for the long term well-being of the golf club from a maintenance/budgetting/strategic perspective) changing things for the mere sake of changing something will do no good

There is another aspect that hasn′t been mentioned and it′s crucial nowadays, and this is pace of play... you also need to keep in mind what kind of golf course do you want to have (either fast or slow) in terms of pace and plan the design accordingly, because setting traps where they can simplify the holes′ strategy can make the players play faster than if it wasn′t there for example

Each course must have a theme, it must be within a landscape and appear to be a certain way, we see this a lot with links golf courses which have certain aesthetics that are specific to those. You need to decide what kind of course do you want to have, what is going to be appealing about them and build the course around that
