You’re a public speaking consultant with a difficult client. How can you keep your cool?

First, establish clear communications and expectations. Not all clients are meant to be your client. Discuss any issues. Come to a resolution or make the decision to dissolve the relationship and move forward. Ensure in the contract there’s clear language on behaviors that will cause an immediate end to the contract.

In my experience, the first thing is being open minded, that way you don’t get offended and you become a very good listener. You empathize by understanding their perspective and apologize if necessary then you proceed to finding a solution. With these, you have shown them that their opinions or concerns are valid which is professional and it leaves room for communicating on the issue at hand and also this helps to maintain a positive client(interpersonal) relationship

Probably "setting boundaries" should be already the first step before establishing collaboration. Having clear ground rules also helps on overall satisfaction, because the expectations are then well managed. For example, there could be a set limit of hours for the project and any extra work is with a clear additional fee or "granted upon agreement".

If facing an active or hidden conflict with a client (or just bad vibes), I personally prefer to go the direct confrontational way and state that "hey, this doesn't seem to be working, let's talk about it" (wording might differ obviously, but basically being honest and upfront). Additionally, I'd try to ask as many questions as possible to understand, what's the problem, and only then jump to solutions or conclusions. It might not be personal at all, maybe the client is going through a very stressful moment OR maybe there is really a lot at stake for the presentation and they have time pressure or they are facing some personal demons related to public speaking that have very little to do with you.

Seeking support is important, I once had an event where I had difficulties because before I got there, there were underlying issues among the management so the atmosphere became so tensed that everyone could dee the negativity in the air and it was dragging down my energy and that of my audience. One thing I had to do was build a very hyper and active relationship with the DiscJockey for the event. This helped us relate and carry out energy with full force into the event and before we knew it we brought the vibes back. I hope this helped

Every event is a platform to grow and be better. One thing I prioritize is mentally going over any event I have hosted in time past and make sure to jot one or two things I could have done better and I make sure to implement those lessons in my next event. This helps me pay attention to details and also self develop.

"Sh*t happens" and sometimes there is just not a fit. Withdrawing from a toxic or non-functional work relationship is actually a rather mature thing to do, and if the other person sees it the same way, there shouldn't be any major problem. I personally tend to look for a closure. If you can do it together with the client, great. But sometimes it is not possible and then you can use some other techniques, for example, writing on a piece of paper all the rage and all the gratitude and then burning or flushing it down the toilet (whatever rocks your boat). ?? If the relationship hasn't worked out because of something you did, you can always send some "sorry it ended this way" gift, for example, a box of macaroons or some witty postcard.
