2 Why is process design important?

Process design is essential for achieving project goals and objectives, as well as aligning the project with the needs and expectations of stakeholders. Through process design, you can clarify the scope, requirements, and deliverables of your project, identify and eliminate bottlenecks, errors, and redundancies in your workflows, streamline and standardize procedures and documentation, increase collaboration and communication among team members and other parties, improve the quality and value of outputs and outcomes, reduce the time, cost, and resources needed to complete a project, monitor progress and performance, as well as improve the flexibility and adaptability of the project to changing conditions.

The process design is important as it affects the output (i.e. effectiveness and efficiency). In general, it determines your organization's performance, which is the money you will earn or lose in producing the particular product throughout the process.

3 How to design your processes?

The four phases of process design - define, measure, analyze, and improve - involve a range of methods and tools. In the define phase, you establish the purpose, scope, and goals of your project while also identifying stakeholders and their roles. Tools such as project charter, stakeholder analysis, voice of the customer, and SIPOC diagram can be used to define the process. The measure phase involves collecting and analyzing data on the current state of your process, using tools like flowchart, data collection plan, check sheet, histogram, and Pareto chart. The analyze phase focuses on identifying root causes of problems and gaps in your process with tools like fishbone diagram, 5 whys, brainstorming, affinity diagram, and force field analysis. The improve phase is about implementing and testing solutions while evaluating the impact and benefits of changes - tools like pilot test, control chart, run chart, and PDCA cycle can help. Finally, you should document and communicate the results.

The most crucial parameters in process design are time, cost and quality. Reduction of manufacturing time enhances the reduction of manufacturing cost. Enhancing the quality control process throughout the process design can avoid rework and reduction of quality cost

Similar product have similar manufacturing process, which are industry- and country-oriemted. The most practical way to learn about process design is to visit different factories in a similar type. After visiting several factories producing similar products, you can understand the processes of producing particular type of product. Every factory may have slightly differences of processes, particularly in different countries. Some of them may have innovative processes to save time and cost to achieve the best quality. However, most factories may not allow you to visit if you are not a buyer or working in the upper tier in the industry. As such, you may need to change more job working for different plants to learn their process.

Experience in various industry can strengthen your understanding of different manufacturing processes in different industries.
