1 Identify potential risks

You can use various tools and techniques to identify risks, such as brainstorming, interviews, surveys, checklists, SWOT analysis, PESTLE analysis, or risk breakdown structure. The goal is to create a comprehensive list of risks that you can prioritize and analyze.

2 Analyze and prioritize risks

The next step is to assess the probability and impact of each risk on your projects. You can use qualitative or quantitative methods to do this, depending on the availability and reliability of data and information. Qualitative methods involve rating risks based on their likelihood and severity, using scales, matrices, or scoring systems. Quantitative methods involve estimating the numerical values of risk probability and impact, using techniques such as expected monetary value, decision trees, or Monte Carlo simulation. The outcome of this step is to rank risks according to their importance and urgency.

3 Plan and implement risk responses

The third step is to develop and execute strategies to address the risks you have identified and analyzed. You can choose from four main types of risk responses: avoid, transfer, mitigate, or accept. Avoidance means eliminating the risk or its causes, by changing the project scope, schedule, or plan. Transfer means shifting the risk or its consequences to a third party, such as a contractor, insurer, or partner. Mitigation means reducing the probability or impact of the risk, by taking preventive or corrective actions. Acceptance means acknowledging the risk and its effects, by setting aside reserves, contingencies, or fallback plans.

4 Monitor and control risks

The final step is to track and review the status and performance of your risk management activities. You need to monitor the occurrence and triggers of risks, the effectiveness and results of risk responses, and the changes and trends in risk exposure. You also need to control the risks by updating and adjusting your risk register, plan, and budget, as well as communicating and reporting the risk information to your stakeholders. The purpose of this step is to ensure that your risk management process is dynamic, iterative, and responsive to changes.
