If someone wants to move from an individual contributor role to a management role, here are some things that might help. Find ways to demonstrate your business sense. Show that you are aware of "the big picture" and competitive landscape. Show that you can understand the context of what you do. Collaborate. Understand the goals of other people on the team and how they relate. Demonstrate that you can plan and allocate resources, moving them from underperforming areas to places with greater potential, even if this is only with your own work. Show that you are aligned with the company goals. Show that you can execute the plan. Be responsible for your own time and energy. Emphasize these things in your yearly review or on your resume

Having an internal mentor that evolves into an advocate is a graceful way to navigate role transition within an organization and it's not uncommon for both managers to have visibility into your transition plan and to support you. Ask for additional projects, to shadow peers in the new role, and formulate a transition plan to track progress and to have an agreed upon set of guidelines, goals, and objectives to align on.
