As an interviewer for leadership roles, a common mistake I see candidates make is providing examples that simply do not demonstrate the required level of seniority for that leadership role. A second common mistake is not demonstrating leadership in examples, thinking that managing a team demonstrates leadership. Instead leadership examples need to demonstrate setting direction, influencing, initiating and motivating.

In my experience the best leaders are the ones with great Emotional Intelligence skills. The best example of your emotional intelligence is how you treat your interviewer. Apart from that, articulate your vision, handle behavioral questions well, balance confidence with humility, focus on team achievements, avoid negativity, adapt your leadership style, ask thoughtful questions, and follow up promptly.
