Focus on what you can control. Research the company, position, and who you are interviewing with. Find any news articles or Glassdoor reviews. You are not expected to be an expert on the company but when you're asked what you know about the organization be prepared with a 1-2 sentence response to show you've done your homework. Practice - google the top 20 behavioral based interview questions and practice your answers in front of a camera. Play your responses back. You're not trying to memorize your answers but getting more comfortable and organizing your experience in the form of a response. What to avoid - dragging on or filling in empty/silent space. Be conscience in your responses and remember, CAR - Circumstance, Action, Result.

When I interview for leadership roles, candidates often focus on leadership concepts and do not successfully relate it back to their experience. Think of the concept you want to show, tie it to an example from your experience and then finish it with an emphasis on what you want the interviewer to take away. If you haven't been a leader before, what is the transferrable skill you want them to see. Focus on three or four main concepts - team building, mentorship, difficult feedback, engagement etc. - make sure you have examples for each and what you took away from the experience. Reviewing your own profile is so important. I have had countless encounters with candidates who are unable to fully explain projects/assignments they have listed on their resume because they assumed it may not be relevant or the interviewer won't focus on it. If its on your CV, make sure you know it inside out! While preparation is important I have also seen candidates try to force fit answers because those are the ones they have prepared. So be flexible and don't feel like you have to share everything you have prepared, focus on what is the best example for what the interviewer is asking, not just what you feel makes you look good!

I find this is a common problem with internal candidates. They think the know the role and expectations from observation or speaking to others in the role. The truth is you probably don't have a clear picture of the leader you are applying to work for or their expectations. What are they looking for from the role, what does success look like? Also, what development is offered and how do you see the successful candidate growing with the organization. This gives you a good sense of how purposeful the hiring is and it lets the leader share their vision for the role, the team and its place within the organization. Never assume you have a clear picture of how these pieces fit together and your interest and comments may set you apart.

Many job seekers come with a speech and prepared answers and just wait for someone to 'press a button' and they will say what they came to say. A good job seeker is a job seeker who is interested, asks questions and wants to understand things in depth. This is how you leave a good impression of a curious job seeker who cares about the company, the job and his achievements in the position. You can combine questions during the interview, and, of course, it is always important to ask questions at the end, it is pleasant way to show that you are attentive and interested.

I know it is not always possible but, gaining this insight and applying it is a clear differentiator in the quality of interview answers. It can leave the hiring manager with a tangible vision of you as the leader of that team. Don't just copy what the other leader told you, adapt it to yourself and it can make you stand out.
