One thing that I learned back when I was captain of my basketball team in college is that ironically, the most important thing about a team is individuality. Knowing this, how can you be a better leader? A framework that I've built over the years is empathetic leadership. Not every basketball player will respond to loud motivational cheering; some prefer a quiet pat on their back and a few words of encouragement. In the same way, not every engineer on your team will respond to feedback delivered one way. Some might need their progress to be acknowledged, while others want more directness. It's your job to learn to be empathetic and learn the individualities of each of your team members. After all, teams are made up of individuals.
