To keep the tempo up and maintain interest from the audience members, the entire communication event needs to be a conversation. Not the kind of conversation that is intended to be only one way. It needs to be an actual conversation, and therefore the speaker needs to be conversational. If you are being authentic to yourself and who you are while engaging in a public conversation – public speaking – then your humor is going to naturally come through in your delivery. Humor is not always cracking a joke. It can be facial expressions, body movements, emphasis, etc.

Don't discount the importance of adding in a touch of self-deprecating humor during your presentation. People appreciate hearing others be vulnerable enough to make light of themselves, especially when it is funny. Just don't go overboard with it. Try to select two to three colleague to share or present with and use the feedback to polish everything.

You are engineering the result you want only by rehearsing your speech until it becomes a part of you. Only then can you deliver from your heart instead of your head.

I teach my students they should deliver their laugh lines deadpan, with a straight face, as though they aren't meant to be funny. If the line does land, deadpan delivery actually amplifies it, and if it doesn't, you can pretend it wasn't a laugh line at all and simply go on to your next idea. If you do get the right kind of laugh -- positive and shared -- the danger is that you might milk the funny bit until you give back all the benefit it delivered. Instead, continue with your presentation, but if you spot the chance to do a callback, a quick and very brief reference to the funny bit, do so. Well-placed callbacks are explosively funny, and you won't milk it to death.
